Description
Hi! I’m Federico, a software engineer and freelance developer from Sicily, Italy. I’ve been working in software development for over 15 years, and during the past year I lived in the Netherlands, where I improved my English, met people from all over the world and discovered how much I enjoy being part of an international community.
My work is mainly technical and mental, so I spend a lot of time in front of a computer, solving problems and working independently. At the moment, I am also exploring the creative side of technology by working on video game development. I enjoy what I do, but I also feel the need to create a better balance by spending time on practical, social and collaborative activities.
I would describe myself as a positive, calm and cooperative person. I like to be useful, understand how things work and contribute to shared projects. I am independent and responsible, but I also enjoy being surrounded by people, exchanging ideas and taking part in everyday community life.
I have a creative side and I enjoy drawing, music and learning new things. I am naturally curious and I like trying activities that are different from my usual work.
I joined Workaway because I want to experience places in a deeper and more authentic way. When I travel, I am not only interested in visiting attractions. I want to understand how people live, discover the local culture and appreciate the work, values and stories behind each place.
At this moment, I am particularly interested in community projects, hostels, cultural spaces and social environments where I can meet and interact with many people. I am not looking for an isolated experience. I would prefer to stay somewhere active, welcoming and connected to a wider community.
I am always happy to help with technology, computers, websites, digital tools or basic technical problems when needed. At the same time, one of my main reasons for joining Workaway is to step away from the screen and contribute in different ways.
I am flexible and happy to take on a variety of tasks. I can help with reception and desk duties, cleaning, cooking, organising spaces, supporting guests, assisting with events and helping with general everyday activities. I am also comfortable with light physical work, although I am not currently suited to very demanding construction work or tasks that require repeatedly lifting very heavy weights.
For me, Workaway is an opportunity to step outside my usual routine, meet people from different backgrounds and rediscover a more practical, creative and human way of spending my time. -

Languages
Languages spoken
Italian: Fluent
English: IntermediateMore details about my language interests
I really enjoy speaking English and I always appreciate opportunities to practice it. Living in the Netherlands for a year gave me the chance to use English every day in both social and professional environments, and it helped me become confident in everyday conversations. I can communicate comfortably and work in English, but I believe languages improve through real interactions with people from different backgrounds. One of the reasons I enjoy travelling is that it allows me to keep improving my English naturally while meeting new people and learning about different cultures. -

More details about your skills
My professional background is in software engineering and web development. I work as a freelance developer, so I am comfortable with computers, websites, digital tools, troubleshooting and learning new technologies quickly. If a host needs help with technical or digital tasks, I am always happy to contribute.
Outside my professional work, I enjoy being part of a team and helping wherever I can.
While living in the Netherlands, I was part of an international community called Host, where I regularly volunteered during community dinners and events. I helped prepare the space, assisted with cooking, washed dishes, cleaned up afterwards and welcomed new participants. I also helped introduce newcomers to the community and explain how activities were organised.
Back in Italy, I occasionally volunteer at a local food bank. I help prepare and organise food packages, welcome people, collect information when needed and support the distribution process. These experiences have taught me the importance of teamwork, organisation and treating everyone with kindness and respect.
I am reliable, organised and adaptable. I enjoy learning by doing and I am happy to take on different kinds of responsibilities depending on what is needed.
I am comfortable helping with cleaning, cooking, reception, guest support, organising spaces, events and other everyday tasks. I also enjoy practical work and using my hands, especially when I have the opportunity to learn something new or be creative.
At the moment, I prefer tasks that involve light or moderate physical activity rather than heavy construction work or jobs that require repeatedly lifting very heavy objects. Apart from that, I am flexible, eager to learn and always willing to help wherever I can. -

What else ...
I think what fascinates me most about travelling is people.
I love discovering new cultures, listening to people’s stories and understanding how different communities live. Every place has its own way of seeing the world, and I believe that stepping outside our usual environment helps us understand ourselves better too.
I’m at a stage in my life where I’m rediscovering myself. One of the reasons I’m travelling is because I want to slow down, meet inspiring people, exchange ideas and see life from different perspectives. Some of the best moments I’ve experienced while travelling were simply long conversations around a dinner table with people from completely different backgrounds.
I enjoy meaningful conversations, but I also like laughing, sharing everyday moments and creating a positive atmosphere around me. I believe that every person has something to teach us, and I hope I can leave something positive behind wherever I go.
I don’t expect Workaway to be just an exchange of work for accommodation. For me, it’s an opportunity to build genuine connections, grow as a person and become, even for a short time, part of a community. -
