  • Description

Hey :) I'm Boyan (18), I've just finished my studies (A-Levels) in the UK and am taking a year out - working and travelling - before I go to university, likely to do Geography. I'm looking to meeting wonderful people and making a tangible impact in the communities/places that I visit, what a wonderful way to travel Workaway seems to be :)

Some of my interests include music (guitar in particular and I wish I was better at singing - if you are then great!) and sports, but I'm really up for anything - more hiking and wild camping/swimming would be a dream! Any game, indoors or outdoors, I'm generally super happy to do. There's so much beautiful nature to explore, like, well, everywhere! Also am always up to read a book/discuss it and share recommendations.
I love connecting with people in general, whether in a more lighthearted/humorous way or through deeper, more thoughtful and contemplative conversations. I will embrace both quieter, more low-key atmospheres and higher-energy ones, and I'm especially looking forward to becoming friends with people (hosts, travellers, anyone...) from different cultures, experiencing what makes their culture and them as an individual unique.

I've always been interested in the Arctic countries: Canada, Scandinavia, Greenland and Russia, so would love to explore the far north. Patagonia is another dream destination; Something about wild endlessness clearly appeals to me :) Honestly this list could go on and on, there are just too many beautiful places and amazing people out there to meet.

Long term I see a future working in the humanitarian fields, helping refugees and/or mitigating the impacts of climate change and natural disasters on communities. This is so cliche but I'm passionate about any work that is about improving people's lives.

Looking forward to meeting amazing people :)

  • More details about your skills

I have had around 1000 hours experience in a professional school kitchen cooking for up to 130 staff and young people aged 3-18. Initially I was a helping hand, before then leading meal preparation, kitchen wash up and shut down. Therefore, I've developed transferrable skills of teamwork, leadership, reliability and communication in high-pressure, complex environments, at the same time as wholeheartedly enjoying the cooking/baking itself! I will try to bring these skills to my workaway, alongside being a proactive person who, where possible, will try to take initiative in whatever I do.

As I devoted myself to a lot of kitchen work, I have less experience in gardening, although I have participated in garden work all my teenage years and have helped out delivering weekly veg boxes to refugees in my local area. I am very eager to learn and develop my skills much further in this area. I also have mild experience of woodwork and maintenance, designing and building a shelf, sanding and varnishing tables, alongside building, dismantling and moving wooden outdoor stages for performances three years in a row. When it comes to professional communications I would say I'm fairly competent, so I can definitely help with that too if that would be useful.

I also have a fair amount of experience mentoring younger people with maths in particular, having learnt how to be a gentle but effective (well, hopefully!)guide, operating by the principle of 'help me to do it myself' in order to develop their confidence, abilities and most of all, curiosity. I'm very interested in pedagogy and education in general so would also be up for anything of this sort.

  • What else ...

Would love to exchange music taste! Got quite a varied one, from Manu Chao to Danish ethereal folk, from Reggae/Protoje to Tame Impala :)
Love almost all board games but particularly articulate and a game of imposter never goes amiss.
Enjoy football, but I'm not great at it, and am decent at Tennis. Anything outside is great, so hiking into the wilderness is totally my thing :)
