Description
Hello! My name is Alana, and I am a 25 year old British and French wildlife conservationist/climate organiser/non-profit starter/writer/filmmaker usually based in Kernow (Cornwall), UK.
This autumn, the plan is that I am taking a sabbatical from my job and departing my home country to travel around Europe for a few months, both in periods with my sister (22 years old) and periods with just me.
When I am travelling with my sister, we are looking primarily for projects that are community-oriented and where we will be able to meet people, learn new skills and make friends. She is skilled in sewing, clothes making/mending, crochet, cooking, baking, with a background in psychology. I bring more digital skills (as listed below) but also want to learn more about permaculture, food growing, etc.
When travelling on my own, I'd love to find projects to stay at that sit within either of the following two categories:
1. A slightly unusual request for WorkAway - but I would love to find projects that I can film for my YouTube channel. I have just started a non-profit workers cooperative with two others, and as part of this, we are looking to film leftist/community/permaculture projects to feature on this channel. As you can imagine, creating a film takes a lot of time, and so I would ask that if you are the right fit for this channel and keen to be featured, you could host and feed me for 1-2 weeks and forego most other labour-intensive WorkAway tasks. I am of course still happy to do communal cooking, basic cleaning, pet sitting/looking after animals and other general household tasks whilst there, but nothing that would take too much time away from the process of filmmaking/editing. 2. Projects that are relaxed, community-oriented, and that I can digital nomad at, as I have freelance work and other personal projects :). My ideal project would be one that has work to do for the hours like animal care, pet sitting, helping in the garden, permaculture, cooking nice meals, etc. and have some friendly people I can meet and become friends with, whilst also having my own space (and good wifi) to work on my non-profit/freelance work/other projects. I am also more than happy to fill the hours with consultation/strategy building for your own social media/website/other content creation (as explained in my 'skills' below). I can also help teach English and French.
I speak English, French, and a little Italian (which I'd love to improve).
My skills include:
- Social media strategy, writing, and content creation. My day job is being the Communications and Campaigns Lead for a wildlife charity, I grew their Instagram from 18k to 38k in two years, so if you need help with social media, I can be your consultant :) I can also create content, branding, copy etc. for you. I also grew my own personal YouTube channel from 0 to 18k+ subscribers in a couple years, so can help advise you if you would like to start a YouTube channel.
- Filmmaking. I have a great 4k camera, gimbal, drone, tripod, microphones, trail camera, etc. with me so can help make films either for my channel (as stated above) or for your own socials. I can help you edit videos or teach you basic editing on Davinci Resolve.
- Community and climate organising. I have previously done freelance work writing reports and creating resources for community groups, organising and hosting people's assemblies, facilitating conversations in these assemblies, and building resilience networks of leftist movements. So I can help with that kind of stuff.
- General knowledge about topics like social ecology, anarchism & leftist political theory, rewilding, wildlife conservation, starting non-profits/coops, other eco/environmental topics, and more...
I can also of course do basic tasks like looking after animals (cats, dogs, chickens, some prior knowledge of horses), cleaning, cooking nice vegetarian/vegan meals, basic gardening (though I'm very much still at the beginning of the learning journey when it comes to growing food/permaculture, so guidance would be appreciated). I'm not the best at super manual tasks like DIY, but I am happy to give it a go.
I have previously stayed at a lovely WorkAway in Italy where I had the best time (and returned), as well as done other volunteering projects in the past.
