  • Description

Hi! I’m Afonso, I’m 21 years old and I’m from Portugal.

What motivates me most is learning through real experiences, being outdoors, working with my hands and understanding how people live and work in different places. I especially enjoy nature, animals, physical challenges and environments where there is always something practical to do or learn.

Over the next few months, I want to spend time on farms and rural projects where I can learn more about animal care, agriculture and a more self-sufficient way of living. I’m particularly interested in horses and cattle, and I would love to learn everything from the basics: feeding, cleaning stables, grooming, handling animals safely, maintaining pastures and fences, and gradually understanding their behaviour and daily routines.

I’m still a beginner with horses, so I don’t want to pretend to have experience that I don’t have. What I can offer instead is a lot of motivation, respect for instructions, patience and a genuine willingness to learn properly from people with experience.

I’m also very interested in vegetable gardening, permaculture, regenerative agriculture, orchards, harvesting, food preservation and learning how food can go from the land to the kitchen and eventually to the table.

I’m physically fit and I enjoy demanding work. I’m comfortable getting dirty, waking up early, working outside, carrying things, cleaning, doing repetitive tasks and helping wherever needed. I ski, practise outdoor sports and spend a lot of time in nature, so I’m used to physical activity and changing weather conditions.

I’m sociable and curious, but I also respect people’s space and enjoy quiet rural environments. I like meeting people from different backgrounds, sharing meals and conversations, and learning about local culture and ways of life.

I speak Portuguese, French and English, and I can also communicate in Spanish.

For me, Workaway is not just about travelling cheaply. I want to leave each experience having genuinely contributed to the project, learned useful skills and built good relationships with the people I lived and worked with.

  • More details about your skills

I’m a practical, energetic and fast-learning person who enjoys physical work and learning by doing.

I’m in very good physical condition and comfortable with demanding outdoor tasks such as carrying materials, cleaning, digging, gardening, maintaining outdoor spaces, moving equipment and helping with general farm work.

I also have continuous practical experience working with Frey, a Portuguese wine project, where I have helped with many of the day-to-day tasks involved in maintaining and working on a farm and vineyard without animals. This has given me real experience with outdoor agricultural work, seasonal tasks, vineyard maintenance, harvesting-related work, general upkeep of the land, carrying materials, cleaning, organising tools and helping wherever needed.

Because of this experience, I’m already comfortable with the rhythm of farm life: working outside, doing repetitive physical tasks, adapting to what needs to be done that day and understanding that many important jobs on a farm are not glamorous, but still need to be done properly.

I’m very interested in developing this experience further by learning more about vegetable gardening, orchards, soil preparation, composting, mulching, harvesting, permaculture and regenerative agriculture.

I’m still a beginner when it comes to horses and livestock, but I’m extremely motivated to learn. I would especially like to gain hands-on experience with feeding animals, cleaning stables, grooming horses, basic horse handling, maintaining paddocks and fences, caring for cattle and understanding the daily routines involved in looking after farm animals.

I learn quickly, follow instructions carefully and I’m happy to start with the most basic tasks and gradually take on more responsibility as I gain experience.

I speak Portuguese, English and French, and I can also communicate in Spanish.

I’m responsible, adaptable and comfortable both working independently and as part of a team. I’m not afraid of getting dirty, waking up early or doing physically demanding work, and I genuinely enjoy contributing to practical projects where I can see the results of the work at the end of the day.

  • What else ...

Outside of work and studies, I really enjoy being active and spending time outdoors.

I love skiing, hiking, swimming, the sea and outdoor sports in general. I also practise spearfishing, which has taught me patience, calmness, awareness of my surroundings and respect for nature.

I enjoy travelling and discovering places through local people rather than only as a tourist. I’m especially interested in rural traditions, local food, agriculture, wine, animals and understanding how people live in different regions.

Food is also something I really enjoy. I like cooking, especially simple meals made with fresh ingredients, and I would love to learn more about traditional recipes, farm-to-table cooking, preserving food and using products directly from the garden or farm.

Socially, I enjoy long conversations, shared meals, meeting people from different countries and learning about their cultures. I’m always happy to join a hike, explore the surroundings, cook together, play cards or simple board games, or just spend an evening talking over dinner.

I’m also very curious by nature. If someone knows how to grow something, repair something, care for an animal, make cheese, produce wine, cook a traditional dish or manage a farm, I’m usually the person asking questions and wanting to understand how it works.

At the same time, I’m comfortable with quiet moments and simple rural life. I don’t need constant entertainment and I genuinely enjoy being surrounded by nature, animals and meaningful daily routines.
