For those who don't want to read everything: We strongly advise future volunteers to think carefully before staying here. Our experience involved serious food safety concerns, troubling treatment #redacted#, and an abrupt end to our stay that left us stranded with nowhere to go.

After discovering that we are, Sabine's attitude towards us seemed to change almost immediately from friendly to hostile. Throughout our conversations, she repeatedly referred to Israel as “the place you come from” without ever saying its name. #redacted#

We also found the work expectations unreasonable. The task was to clear thick vegetation along the fence using only a pair of scissors. When I asked her why we couldn't use the appropriate power tool, she said it was already in "winter storage" and that her partner wasn't there to operate it. This was an impossible job to do with scissors alone, so naturally, we couldn’t trim everything to perfection. Instead of understanding common sense, she told us it looked like we had done nothing and that we were "not suitable" for this kind of labor.

Additionally, Sabine knew very little about the equipment (she couldn’t even start the lawn mower without Omer’s help!). Omer has worked as a gardener and has extensive experience with mower equipment. Before we started working, she noted that we should use the old lawn mower in areas that might cause damage to it (since there was already a new one anyway) and that it could be used to trim challenging terrain, specifically areas with rocks. After a few minutes of mowing a rocky area under her direct supervision, the machine broke down. For some reason, she was surprised and was quick to blame Omer for “damaging her equipment”.

There were also serious concerns regarding the food. Sabine had asked about our dietary requirements beforehand via WhatsApp, and we explained that we are vegetarian and not picky. We also explicitly confirmed that Yali has a life-threatening peanut allergy, which is also clearly stated on our profile. Nevertheless, much of the provided food contained meat, some items were expired or opened and partially eaten, and a container of peanut butter was the first thing we saw upon opening the fridge.
We did not expect anything fancy- just suitable and safe food.

On our first day, Sabine confronted us about our "vibe" and stated clearly that she didn't see how we could stay on the farm any longer given these incidents. The following morning, she claimed she had considered giving us a second chance and that we were the ones who decided to part ways. Funny enough, right after her "gentle suggestions" for us to leave, we noticed her profile had changed and was already looking for volunteers immediately!
So why did all of this happen? We still struggle with that question. As people of science: Omer is a physics student and Yali studies neuroscience, we naturally tried to use common sense and open dialogue to understand what we had done wrong. However, all she offered was that it was "unexplainable" and suggested that perhaps she was more sensitive than usual due to the full moon (we are not even joking).

We had planned and paid for flights and a long journey specifically for a two-week stay. Instead, after less than 48 hours, we were dropped off at a remote bus stop with heavy luggage, limited funds, no accommodation, and difficulty communicating with locals. Sabine did not even drive us back to the original station where she had picked us up.

Right now, we are at a different Workaway (after a long and expensive journey), and we feel deeply grateful that there are kind, honest hosts in the world whose warmth overshadows people like Sabine.
We are sorry that there are people that might dislike whatever they assume we represent. Unfortunately, we know there are people who will judge us without knowing anything about us- that is simply the world we live in.

But to make us go through all of this distress is not right under any circumstances.

Unfortunately, this was not a good match for us.

We have been hosting volunteers through Workaway for around ten years, and this was a very unusual experience for us. We normally develop a warm and natural connection with our volunteers quite quickly, and that is an important part of how we live and work here. With this stay, that connection … read more simply wasn't there. From the beginning, I felt a certain distance, as if there was a wall between us, and I had the feeling that we had very different expectations about what the volunteering experience would be like.

After I spoke with Omer about some of the things I had noticed, he also mentioned that they had some concerns about the food available to them in the fridge and pantry. including the fact that there was an unopened and closed jar of peanut sauce in the refrigerator, because Yali has a nut allergy. I completely understand that allergies need to be taken seriously, but the jar was unopened and closed. There were also complaints about the type of milk we had available, as they preferred fresh milk rather than UHT milk. Of course, everyone has their own dietary preferences, but when staying as a volunteer, some flexibility is important. You cannot always expect the same food, products or comforts that you are used to at home.

I also noticed difficulties with communication and following instructions. For example, I explained several times how I wanted certain easy gardening work to be done, but the instructions were repeatedly not followed. This made it difficult to work together.

There was also an incident with an older lawn mower. I understand that old equipment can break, but I found the way it was handled quite rough. What disappointed me afterwards was that there was no apology or acknowledgement about what had happened.

After the first day, I felt it was better to address the situation immediately rather than let things become increasingly frustrating for everyone. I spoke with Omer and explained honestly how I was experiencing the situation. We agreed to give it another day and see how things developed. I also asked whether he wanted me to speak directly with Yali, but he said he would talk to her himself.

The following morning, Omer came to me himself and told me that they had decided to leave. I had not even spoken with Yali that morning. I respected their decision and, despite the situation, I drove them to the bus stop so they could continue their journey.

I had actually been prepared to give it a little more time, but I felt that if the connection and expectations were already so different after the first day, it was better to stop early rather than let things become increasingly frustrating for both sides. It was an unfortunate situation, especially as they had travelled all the way from Israel, but I believe it was better to be honest and give both sides the opportunity to move on.

I genuinely wish them a safe journey and hope they find a place that is a better fit for them and that they still have a good experience during their travels.

For future Workaway experiences, I would recommend being prepared for a little more flexibility around food and daily living conditions, and being open to listening carefully to the host's instructions and way of working. These are important parts of volunteering, especially on a private farm.
