Hey there!

My name is Nele, I am 23 years old, and I come from a small but lovely town named Rudolstadt in East Germany. I have always loved traveling, meeting new people from different cultures, backgrounds, languages, and traditions! It's amazing to see how beautifully different we all are, yet how many things we have in common at the same time! I want to learn from people and improve myself to become a better person, and I believe traveling is a great opportunity for that!

I'm currently pursuing my master's degree in *Education, Cultural Studies & Anthropology*, where we mainly focus on how to give educational lectures in formal education (pedagogy) and explore various subjects in the humanities, such as political science, philosophy, sociology, and religion.

I completed my bachelor's degree in world religions and philosophy at university, which is why I love to philosophize and talk about God and the world. ;) I'm curious to explore new countries I haven't seen yet and improve my language skills. I am very open-minded and enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds, listening to exciting stories, and learning new skills.

At the moment, I mainly spend my free time working on art and gardening. Additionally, I am involved in organizing and sharing educational projects for youth and young adults through both non-formal and formal education—especially focusing on mental health and how it can be expressed through art (e.g., by attending European ERASMUS+ education programs). Furthermore, I visit schools to give presentations about my personal experiences with Workaway, Couchsurfing, and traveling solo as a female traveler.

I consider myself a very talkative, creative, and curious person who loves to share past experiences and travel stories. Additionally, I have a deep love for adventure, so I am excited about surfing (I'm slowly becoming an intermediate, so please teach me more!), hitchhiking, camping, and experiencing breathtaking nature. I have recently started organizing projects for young people, and I also love dancing and making music.

I truly appreciate the opportunity to travel with Workaway, learn new skills, share cultures, and create amazing projects together. 😊

About Me and My Work Experience

In my opinion, I am very open to any kind of work and excited to take on new challenges. I am always eager to try different tasks and learn new skills.

I love working with:

- ART & PHOTOGRAPHY: I enjoy being creative and working on handyman jobs and art projects (painting, decorating, building, etc.). I paint a lot in my free time and also for official exhibitions.
- SOCIAL PROJECTS:Teaching English, organizing events or projects for youth
- PERMACULTURE & GARDENING: I am currently working on a biodiversity project in my home country.
- ANIMALS: I especially love dogs!
- CHILDCARE & BABYSITTING: I have experience in childcare and babysitting—I'm an aunt to a 9-year-old nephew.
- TOURISM: I have experience in hostel cleaning, check-ins, and general hospitality tasks. I also love helping to build and create new things!

I am quite good with my hands, so anything related to building, decorating, creating, and other handyman tasks—I'm your person!

What else ...
Regarding how workaway usually works :

Workaway, as a sharing and creative platform, should be comfortable and beneficial for both hosts and volunteers. Cultural exchange, as well as a fair exchange of services, should always be at the core of the experience. Therefore, Workaway recommends certain guidelines for both parties:

> "Workaway is primarily about cultural exchange and learning opportunities, so it’s important that you interact with your visitors as much as you can and make them feel part of the family, community, or team. Hosts are generally asked to provide accommodation and food in exchange for help from Workawayers for around 4-5 hours per day, 5 days a week." (Workaway.com)

I find it very important that both hosts and volunteers share a common understanding when it comes to working rights and clear communication about expectations, rules, and responsibilities.

Although most of my experiences have been truly amazing, with a great working atmosphere and meaningful shared time, I have unfortunately also encountered a few cases of poor working conditions. These included: no days off, a lack of clear communication from hosts regarding expectations, disrespectful behavior towards volunteers, no support in case of problems, and even illegal labor practices.

For this reason, I feel the need to emphasize that Workaway is primarily meant for cultural exchange and volunteer assistance—not for volunteers to run entire businesses on behalf of their hosts!

In the case of unpaid work, I will not work more than 5 hours per day for free or be treated as if I were a full-time professional employee without receiving proper meals or respect for the work I contribute. Please keep in mind that this platform is not a professional job agency but rather a space where creative help is offered where needed. I will always do my best—I'm not here to take advantage of the platform or be a lazy pain in the *** 😉—but I do want to ensure a positive and fair atmosphere for both parties.

In the case of accommodation-only offers:
I am open to arrangements where food is not provided, **as long as** the work does not exceed **3 hours per day** or consists of lighter tasks only. Thank you! 😊

I stayed with Israel and many other workawayers ( about 10 plus 3 Mexican workers at that time ) for 2 weeks in the middle of jungle near Puerto Morelos. He seems to… read more be a calm and interesting person and puts so much Energy And passion in his project,which is really awesome and fascinating. To stay with the community was just great . I met so many nice and open-mindedness travels and made very good friends, with whom I would travel together after .Unfortunately Israel forgot in the beginning that I was coming as well so It was very chaotic and not well organised in the beginning so I had no own tent to sleep in first . Furthermore I felt that there was not enough communication in the community a lot of times and Israel and his wife were busy most of the times so I didn't really talk to them much and they didn't really introduce themselves . Everything was explained to me just by other workawayers which was not the best way . The work was also very hard in the jungle and got boring after a while because we had to do the same thing every day for 5 hours . We ate just vegan which was a real challenge for me in the beginning but it worked out good in the end . Otherwise we had bicycles we could use to go to the city which was really great ,but again we were to many people for some days which made the stay a little uncomfortable in the beginning because there was just one compost toilet and everything was a little messed up. But in the end we had a great feedback conversation and Israel tries everything to improve the quality. He already changed the type of work and gave more diversity after we told him . He also gave us many lifts and we could enjoy great mornings near a
the beach and went to a beautiful Cenote ones . I really got close to many people and the community was a amazing after we figured out some problems. They were all very friendly and I learned soo much about myself and other people staying there . The jungle work is great but can get very exhausting too,so prepare to bring long clothes and anti bug spray ( I got biten by so many mean jungle feas on my legs and had so many itchy and inflamed bites I never had before) !!! The climate is very very humide and hot, so being the first time in Mexico was very challenging for me .
The conclusion is that the beginning of my stay was very chaotic and a little annoying because it was not well organised. I missed the relationship to the actual host a lot and communication was often missing. Moreover in the end I had a really great time with all the nice people and made some awesome travels going to Puerto Morelos and working in the real jungle with Mexicans ( when do you have this opportunity in life ?) . If you search for a hippie and more alternative tent stay with compost toilet, working hard in the real jungle, doing early Yoga classes, eating vegan and experiencing a new but sometime also exhausting life style that's the perfect place for you !
