  • Description

    Hi there!

We are Chris and Chip, a couple from the South of England. After having such a positive experience of Workaways on our trip through France 2 years ago, we are now in a position to get back on the road, and help more hosts out with their projects! We are excited to have upgraded our van to something slightly larger (a high-top VW T4) with more space and facilities, so that we can be relatively self-sufficient. Our long-term aim is to buy a piece of land and build our own cabin on it, so we are really keen to learn about other people's experiences of building this type of structure, and living off-grid.

Between us we have a weird and wonderful range of skills. Chip has the organisation and efficiency of his Army training (he was in the Royal Signals, and part of their Motorcycle Display Team), enjoys physical outdoor jobs and is particularly keen on using and improving his woodworking skills. Chip is also a qualified Web Developer, and is generally great at troubleshooting tech problems. He is a enthusiastic worker and is always keen to get started on the next project. In the last few years, he has taught himself how to use a sewing machine, and is capable of making bags, heavy duty covers, and many other wonderful textile items. Chip currently works at a company who produce specialised trikes, and is a wizz with a 3D printer!

For myself (Chris), I studied Environmental Science at University and then spent time in a whole range of different jobs to fund trips abroad. Most of my experience has been in outdoor roles such as Countryside Rangering and practical conservation work. I have just finished a 5-year stint working as a gardener on my local Uni Campus, growing veg and maintaining the grounds. I also have a keen interest in all aspects of tree work. If anyone needs a hand with painting work, I trained for several years as a painter and decorator specialising in historic buildings. Recently I have been re-training as a proof-reader, and hope to develop these new skills into a career which I can pursue remotely.

Past Workaway projects which we have taken part in include mucking out goats, gardening, kitchen fitting, and digging a drainage channel! We both enjoy physical outdoor tasks, and would also like the chance to get involved with creative projects, improve our grasp of foreign languages, gain experience in hospitality, and pursue opportunities to learn new skills.

Outside of work, the main things we enjoy doing together are hiking in beautiful quiet places with our dog, water sports, running (including canicross), cycling, reading, seeing new places, trying new foods, and learning about different cultures. Our favourite trip together so far has been our cycle touring adventure from the UK across Europe to the Black Sea, and we really value hearing about other peoples travels and experiences!
