  • Description

Hello! I'm Taeya, I'm 23 and using workaway to find opportunities to travel sustainably and learn through work and meeting new people.
I am from the southern countryside of the UK, and I love the outdoors. I love wildlife spotting (especially whilst out on a good long walk), exploring, wild swimming, hiking, yoga, gardening and so much more. On a slower pace day, I enjoy playing with painting, flowers, something creative, cooking or reading a good book. More recently I have started teaching myself guitar (acoustic) which has been really special in my personal time. Whilst I value my personal time, I am also quite social and greatly appreciate connecting with others. Playing games, sharing company over dinner, or just chatting away over a fire with others is a lovely way to spend time.
I am currently a student in ecology and wildlife conservation (at university), and I greatly care for our natural world and for doing all we can to take care of it. The reason I have joined this site is because I would love to be able to do something I care about, learn, see new places and meet new people. I have travelled independently a few times before and have loved it, a place close to my heart is Goa, India. The people I met and friends I made are still close to my heart and that is also the place I learnt how to teach yoga; all something I will be forever grateful for (happy to share flows/teach).
I currently don't have a specific job I am looking for, I am very flexible and open. If the role is closer to my subject of study that would be great but again, I'm easy-going. I have plenty of experience in different jobs working with children, older adults and in hospitality for example.
Hopefully, if we cross paths we can share more!

More details about my language interests
In the last few years, I have been trying to teach myself French (poorly). Whilst I have beginner's knowledge, I would like to learn to speak French fluently, so if the opportunity should arise to be taught, I would take it! I am also interested in learning any other languages!

  • More details about your skills

I would say I have a range of skills to offer, with my first being that I am a very fast learner, especially with practical or hands-on work. I recently volunteered with The CPRE Countryside Charity, helping plant hedges for the Hampshire Hedge Project. The aim of the project is to increase connectivity of habitats, biodiversity and mitigate climate change for the area. In this experience I learnt how to carry out hedge planting on small-large scales and I practiced working independently and in groups. It was very rewarding and enjoyable work.

I also have lots of work volunteering, at my local hospital, assisting with meal times on the wards and in places like a trail running festival in the Lake District UK.

Growing up in my household taught me many things such as how to paint and decorate, clean well, garden, fix furniture, clothing or my car, cook and so much more. I would say generally I'm a 'jack of all trades' in that way. I also have experience caring for animals/pets (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, horses, hedgehogs, geckos).

I would be happy to teach yoga and help or lead in guided meditations or walks. I have practiced for over 10 years and have a 200hr certificate specialising in Yin Yoga. I would also be confident in leading groups for other various activities.

I love being creative, making bouquets, drying or pressing flowers, painting, drawing, collaging and so on. I can do that with others or for a project.

Based on experience I have working with children and older adults, I learnt how to bring my empathy, care, communication, and interpersonal skills into a profession. I also worked in hospitality for many years, teaching me a lot about working in teams or individually, working under pressure, paying attention to detail and being flexible in your role. All in all, I have a very can-do attitude, a lot of experience, I am a flexible, strong and hard worker and care greatly now about working for the outdoors.

Because of my studies, I am developing a good knowledge of ecology and conservation topics. For example, land designation, planning, creating ideas for sustainable/eco projects, and assessing the importance of an area of land. These are all things I would love to help with given the chance, but again anything hands-on or creative based is great too.

I have been self-taught and continuously growing my knowledge and skills with species ID (birds, plants, fungi, insects, mammals). I can read maps and navigate moderately well.
