Dutch girl with an obsession for photography.
I'm a freelance event/festival builder, so most of the summer I carry fences around empty fields. I used to work in marketing/communications for museums, but spending 40 hours a week behind a computersceen was not my cup of tea.
After a couple of years building festivals, I'm now interesterd in learning building/carpentry skills for projects that are meant to last more then a month tops. I'm currently converting my van into a campervan, and I like making my own frames for my photographs.
I would love to help out on a building/carpentry/restauration project and learn new skills and techniques. I'm especially interested in renovating and restoring furniture. Next to photography I love surfing, reading, hiking, cycling and coffee. I'm also really into art history and philosophy and I'd love to improve my Spanish and German.

I had a great time. The accomodation was very comfortable, we stayed in one of the houses they rent to tourists in the summer. It very quickly felt like home to me. The group of people which I stayed there with was great, Colin picked well! I enjoyed the work, light carpentry, painting and odd jobs around the holiday houses, and when the weather… read more was good we went to prune olive trees. Colin doesn't micro-manage, he is also around, working around the houses and is very approachable for questions or instructions. He is also open to suggestions on how to tackle projects and he has a good sense of when to make a clear descision on how he wants things to be done or when to give a workawayer more autonomy in completing jobs. Luisa is less involved in the daily workaway work, but she pops by every once in a while for a chat and is really nice.
We worked from 9 to 2, for 5 days a week, and Colin cooked amazing lunches after work. (Man, I miss those lunches...) Next to that we had a fridge filled with food, and could give Colin grocery lists to do food shopping. That would be my only minor point of improvement: It wasn't always clear when groceries would be done. I think we didn't communicate clearly enough when we needed something, and Colins shopping spree was irregular, so we didn't know when it was the best time to ask for new groceries. Which lead to running dangerously low on toilet paper once, haha. I think clearer communication from both parties, or actual paper shopping lists instead of an online one could tackle this easily.
The location is nice, in the afternoon you can relaxt, go for nice walks and explore the villages. In the weekends you can easily go on day or weekend trips to Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre and Lucca. Be aware that the trainstation is a 45 minute walk, so it requires some planning to on trips, but I personally found the walk not too bad. The bus stop is just 10 minutes down the hill.
I felt that in terms of hosting volunteers, it was very well organised. We got clear information before we traveled there, Colin picked us up from the station on the first day, lunching and making pizzas together was great teambuilding.

What I take away from this workaway are loads of super interesting conversations, a new appreciation for food in general (the bread, oh, the bread... Making pizza in the pizza oven. Olive oil. Pesto. Cheese. Those superb lunches...) plenty of new skills learned, including pruning olive trees, and just so many great memories. Would definitely recommend.
