  • Description

Hello, our names are Nils and Meike. I (Meike) come from a village near Stuttgart and live in an apartment with my parents, my sister and my dog. In 2022 I already did a year of Work and Travel and worked on three different farms during that time, two of which I found through Workaway. Here I was always lucky enough to work with many animals, from sheep, pigs, cows, horses, chickens and geese, everything was represented. I love working with my hands, whether it's caring for animals, doing craft projects or chopping wood for the stove. I'm quick on the uptake and can quickly memorize necessary procedures, but I'm also happy to offer suggestions if I can think of a way to improve something. I have always particularly enjoyed working with horses, as I can learn a lot here and always see things from different perspectives. In my free time, I like to go climbing, hiking, dancing and when the weather is bad, I like to sit down with a book after work. I currently work as a chemical-technical assistant in a research institute, which unfortunately limits my free time to evenings and weekends. This year I wanted to show my boyfriend how much fun it is to work on a farm, so we had to update our profile. Nils hasn't had any experience with Workaway yet, but he enjoys being outdoors, hiking and climbing with me. He has no problem getting his hands dirty and enjoys manual work. He is not very familiar with working with animals, but he learns quickly and is not afraid of them

  • More details about your skills

I memorized the various routines on farms and was able to carry them out independently even after a short training period, these were mostly feeding the animals and mucking out the stables, preparing the horses for riding lessons and lunging or riding out with them. Cutting the claws of sheep, moving cows, horses and sheep to other paddocks and also helping with the birth of calves (of course with instructions from the vet) are tasks I have already taken on.
In terms of craftsmanship, I have often chopped wood (and have not yet lost a toe😉), worked with circular saws, hammer and screwdriver (in Norway I helped to build the outer walls of a shed) and repaired one or the other fence.

  • What else ...

Since I work full-time, I can unfortunately only tear around during my vacation. But I miss working on a farm, especially working with animals, and would therefore like to try to find a farm where I can help out for about 3 weeks. I am looking forward to continuing to get to know many different cultures and to get in touch with different people and to get a taste of their lives.
