Description

Hello,

Our names are Marie and Jonathan. We are bicycle adventurers, travelling around Scandinavia and exploring different farming concepts and ways of living.

We're looking for learning new skills, exchanging experiences, meeting new people and getting inspired for some alternative ways of life, as we don't want to go back to a traditional kind of 9-to-5 city life.

We left Germany and our lives in Bonn on our bikes in April last year. After having cycled up to Northern Norway, we spent the last winter there, volunteering on two different farms via the Wwoofing network and getting immersed in the local community. Now we are cycling around Denmark, currently exploring Ærø, and are curious to learn about organic gardening methods as well as to meet more of the kind people in the area.

We like physical work outside, don't care about the weather too much as long as we have a warm and dry place at the end of the day.
Both of us love working with and being around animals and are interested in learning more about organic farming and sustainable ways of life in the different climatic conditions in the North of Europe.

Being outdoorsy people, we are looking forward to exploring the surroundings of your place in our freetime on bike and by foot. We are also very much interested in getting to know local plants and wild animals.

Both of us gathered several volunteering experiences individually, including on farms (organic, commercial and non-commercial) on platforms including workaway, but also Wwoofing and helpx (Australia, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Spain). Together we have furthermore spent more than nine months volunteering on two farms in Northern Norway. The first farm was a dairy farm where we milked and took care of cows. On the second farm, we built up a permaculture food forest from scratch, including a Hügelbed, a herb spiral, potato towers, gates, paths and signs, using different gardening and woodworking tools (chainsaw, jigsaw, table saw, drill and many more). We further took care of the animals on the farm (sheep, goats, ponies, pigs, dogs, rabbits, chicken, peacocks, ducks, geese, turkeys) and have quite some experience with building fences in different terrains.

Now we are particularly looking for experiences on organic farms or gardens focusing on fruits and vegetables since this is something we could imagine having ourselves in the future.

"What a day" was an expression I used to say in the evening, smiling, after another wonderful, exciting and totally unexpected day in Ireland.

Staying with the Cahill family was the best thing that could happen to me. I can't believe the one month I lived with them in beautiful South West Ireland is already over now, and I miss them all a lot. … read more So, this review is long overdue!
This was my first workaway experience, and I couldn't have hoped for better first hosts. Lorna and Daniel picked me up when I arrived with the bus in Cork, and on the way to Schull the scenery got more stunning and beautiful with every kilometre. Ana awaited us in Lowertown with Murray and Alfie, and I immediately felt at home with this lovely family in the comfortable and unique house.

During my stay I helped the family with different tasks - painting parts of the house, walking the dogs, cutting trees, weeding, cleaning, preparing a bithday party - and walking the dogs, of course! We even celebrated Murray's 8th birthday, trained Alfie at the beach to come when we shouted his name, and watched the puppy losing his first teeth. There was never too much work, and I had a lot of freetime to explore the surroundings. There are many castles, the coast is beautiful, and the view from up the hills amazing. We sometimes visitied Sasha, Ana's pony, and Mavis, the cat, used to sleep in my room from time to time. Our lives revolved around the animals, and they were treated as part of the family. So, who are these lovely people I stayed with? It's hard to tell in only a couple of sentences - you need to meet them, everyone should. They are simply wonderful.

Lorna is such a good soul! She's sensitive, kind and generous, and we had a lot of interesting talks and small roadtrips together. She's also an amazingly good cook, and I loved spending time with her in the kitchen.
Daniel is a hard worker, rugby fan and my chocolate partner in crime. He told me a lot about the surroundings and Fastnet Lighthouse, and was always patient enough to help me find my tools for working around the house.
Ana is a wonderful young woman, and we got on really well! We had so much fun on all our trips in the car, listening to music and sharing experiences. And I'm pretty sure we can open our own café with the vegan brownies and our mug cakes, if college doesn't work out for us.

The whole family took good care of me, and from the first evening I arrived I knew it would be hard to leave this place again. Thank you, thank you so much for everything! Dinner time was always my favourite time of the day, when everyone came together upstairs, we lit the candles and had good food. And of course our long walks at the beach and going to the pub for lunch on the weekend! So many memories...

I really feel I've found family in Ireland, and I hope to return soon. I miss you all, and remember the light from Fastnet Lighthouse shining above the hill at night with a smile on my face. Love you lots XXX
