Hello !
My name is Léia.
I'm half Afro-American, and half Polish, German, and French.
I am a joyful and dedicated person, who loves to interact and help people.
I love to take care of children, care for animals and garden.
I also like to teach, cook and do activities.

ABOUT MYSELF:
My father is from upstate New York, my mother was born in the suburb of Paris, and I was birthed in the town of Saint Béat, which is situated in the mountains of the French Pyrenees.
I grew up in France and have lived in different regions; Toulouse, le Lot and Paris mainly.
Though I am nothing like a typical stereo French person, just for your information.
In addition I've traveled much to other places.
I am currently in Barcelona.
I am an artist.
I practice tap dance and singing, and will soon be attending the Luthier Tap school here in Barcelona.
Home schooled, with having had the experience of attending public and private school.
Me and my parents have been to New York, Guadeloupe, Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands, and Spain.
I've lived in each of these places, and have experienced each of their cultures, including American culture (black, white and native).
I have had a lot of diverse experiences in my life and have learned a ton in many areas.

SOBRE MÍ:
Mi padre es del norte del estado de Nueva York, mi madre nació en las afueras de París y yo nací en el pueblo de Saint-Béat, situado en las montañas de los Pirineos franceses.

Soy artista.

Me eduqué en casa, aunque también tuve la experiencia de asistir a escuelas públicas y privadas.
He viajado con mis padres a Nueva York, Guadalupe, Bélgica, Portugal, los Países Bajos y España.
He vivido en cada uno de estos lugares y he experimentado sus respectivas culturas, incluida la cultura estadounidense (afroamericana, blanca y nativa). He tenido muchas experiencias diversas a lo largo de mi vida y he aprendido muchísimo en muchos ámbitos.

On our preliminary video call with Leia, I met a mature, quick-witted young woman. Her profile stated she had gardening experience, which is what I was looking for. She said she was up to the land work I described.

My profile asks volunteers to have their own transportation, but I made an exception, and we agreed on a one-week stay starting … read more Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, Leia called at 8 pm to say she had no accommodation organised for the night. She asked me to pick her up at the train station a day earlier, at 11 pm I collected her.

On her first day working, I quickly realised that Leia had no gardening experience. She also had no adequate basic footwear for the work, I lent her a pair of mine. Progress was extremely slow: a task a previous volunteer completed in two days was still unfinished after four days. Advice wasn't followed, on how to remove olive shoots correctly for example, and stamina was very low.

As Leia's profile mentioned three or four previous volunteering experiences, I became curious as to why she had no reviews. She replied that none of the hosts had been kind or appreciated her work. I realise now I should really have asked about reviews during our preliminary call; that answer would have been a clear red flag.

On her day off, I took Leia on an excursion to see the area. She was relaxed, engaged, and seemed interested in the local sights.

My profile also states that there is no Wifi here. When Leia arrived she had no internet, and two days later, no phone data either. She made no attempt to buy any and relied on my phone instead.

Without connectivity, I became the message switchboard between her and her family. Then Leia asked to use my phone to speak with them directly. When the requests kept coming, I set a limit and asked the mother to reach her daughter on her own number instead. Just before dinner that day, Leia wanted my phone again and I refused. She shut herself in her room.

When I went to speak to her, she said she had been thinking of leaving the next morning. We agreed the stay was over. After checking the train times and the availability at the hostel she had chosen for two days later, I drove her to the station that same evening.

Not the Workaway experience I hoped for.

To future hosts: check references and make sure the volunteer is self-reliant on the basics, so your support can go where it matters.

One day I had a family emergency and needed to borrow her phone to call my mom. She only let me talk to her for a dozen of minutes and was cruel about it.
Then later that day I asked her if I could call back my mother to check up on things; she told me no.
