  • Description

I signed up for Workaway prior to the pandemic and only had two experiences before the world shut down. First I worked for a month in Northern Ireland on a horse farm. I did a lot of gardening, landscaping and caring for the horses. I mucked out stalls and paddock areas. I also helped out with some of the cooking and cleaning. My second experience was outside Philadelphia helping a couple restore their Victorian home. My days were filled with scraping old lead paint from door and window frames. I have been a “volunteer traveler” . Going twice to Luang Prabang Laos for 2 months teaching English to monks and school aged kids through GVI. I have travelled to Zimbabwe and worked on a Conservation Project for three weeks and then to Botswana to help with a conservation group identifying local animals for a research group. During Covid I have helped family and friends with landscaping, gardening and house painting. Summer of 2021 I volunteered weekly at a Food Bank in their food garden helping with planting, weeding, mulching and cultivating food. My third WorkAway was July of 2022, I spent one month working at a small ranch in SW Colorado. I helped to take care of 4 horses and 2 ponies. I did a lot of yard work: mowing, weed wacking, planting flower beds and weeding. Sorted and stacked used lumber removing old rusty nails. Cleared small trees and brush along a river bed to open it up for the horses to have better access. Cleaned stalls, water troughs and tack. I have a lot of experience riding and caring for horses. I have ridden all my life.
My last WorkAway, April of 2023, I was on a horse farm outside Melbourne, Australia. They owned over 30 horses and our duties involved mixing feeds, distributing feed and hay, filling water troughs, mucking stalls, cleaning horse blankets, taking them on and off due to changes in weather. We rode a few times a week in the arena or the adjacent forest. I also helped the owners with painting and landscaping,
I currently live in Washington DC and volunteer with the United States Botanical Gardens.
