Hey, my name is Helena and I joined workaway because I hope to experience traveling in a new way.

I consider myself an outgoing and honest person, I love to meet new people and learn about new cultures.
After finishing school I want to get to know some places in the world before studying to become a journalist.
I've travelled lot so far and have been to a number of countries including Sweden, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Croatia, Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Portugal and Spain.
I grew up in a rural area in northern Germany and activities I enjoy doing are long walks with my dog (she's the best) , hiking up any mountain I can find, cuddling with my cat (he's also the best) or reading. All our animals are rescues and it has been very rewarding seeing their progress so far. Especially our dog was very anxious and hesitant at first and now she's the best companion anyone could wish for.
Aside from that I've also been involved with horses for 15 years; I took lessons at first and then cared for a few horses for a few years and mainly went trail riding in our local forest during that time. Because of that I also have experience with heavier horses (Belgian Drafthorse, Norwegian Fjordhorse...) and know how to handle horses with "character". I don't have experience explicitly training a horse or recieved lessons in training horses but that is an area I would love to explore further.
It's safe to say that animals are a big part of my life but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I love long, honest talks about anything and everything, jamming to good music on long car rides (if you have recommendations, show me!) and laughing until we lay on the ground.
When I'm staying over New Years Eve with you I would love to introduce you to my family's tradition of the New Years Dip, where we usually jump into the Baltic Sea in January 1st. Of course, it doens't have to be the Baltic Sea and can be any form of ice cold water ;)
The place where I'm most at myself is when I'm on the back of a horse on a long trail ride exploring the surrounding nature. Or when I'm cuddling animals (except wasps. or spiders)

Since I grew up around horses I know all the basics - picking up poo from the pasture, tacking up a horse, grooming a horse or of course riding a horse (english style), just to name a few.
Feeding animals is something I´ve been doing on the daily and is nothing new to me.
Otherwise, I´ve taken part in haying season a few times now.
I also had a mini job for two years where I carried out children's birthday parties on a small farm, so I'm experienced in a fast paced work environment where multitasking is needed.
I can also do some basic gardening tasks like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, sweeping the terrace, etc.
I'm resilient when it comes to weather, especially rain and cold temperatures, as it`s always raining where I'm from. We have the saying that you can tell it`s summer when the rain is getting warmer.
I absolutely love to try new things and learn new skills. I might be a little slow at them first, but I'm a fast learner! One time, I had a two week internship at a farrier where I used an angle grinder and build a wine shelf with old horseshoes for the first time! I've never done that sort of thing before but I even used a flame thrower to work the wood and had a lot of fun. Because of this internship I can remove horseshoes in case of an emergency.

Due to a genetic disorder i need to wear hearing aids, but you usually don´t notice them. However, if there is a lot of noise around us I might need to ask you to speak up a bit.

Me and my twin sister were at Jackies farm in February and we can honestly say it was one of our best times here in Canada.
When we arrived there was a lot of snow and it definitely did not get less, so be prepared! Thankfully Jackie has a lot of things to keep you warm if you´re not used to such weather and we were especially glad about the … read more snowboots she had with proper insulation because you will definitely need them!
We were also really happy that each of us had their own big room (with a theme!!) with all the space and especially happy about Jackies cooking! She makes a mean soup, we couldn´t get enough of it.
Jackie always genuinely tried everything to make our time the best, and even though there isn´t a lot to do in February like kayaking or riding, she found sooo many things we could to instead! For example she took us to Bingo (and pointed out that I missed a win… oops!), we went to a Valentines Day fair, we visited the sheep club where we could to take a look at the curling rink, went on car rides to look for moose (only to find one on the way back from Lloydmister), went on a snowy hike with the dogs (where we could see maaany footprints of wild animals, even from a wolf!), and, one of our highlights: she took us to friends of hers to see little newborn calves and…. little lambs!!! There were sooooo cute and we immediately fell in love. We got so lucky with the timing!
One night there were even northern lights out and she just told us to hop in the car and drove us to a nearby field to have an unobstructed view. She´s always making sure we have the best experience there is to have in Canada.
As for the workload, it wasn´t that much but it definitely depended on the weather. On the colder days you won´t spend too much time outside, just taking care of the animals and making sure they´re fed, watered and happy. Right in the beginning there was an unusual warm period where we were able to use the weather to our advantage and get some duck and chicken enclosures cleaned, all in all you can say if you are aware you´re working on a farm, have a little common sense and are not afraid to get a bit dirty, you´re a perfect fit!
Also we loved all the animals and stopped every second we could to cuddle them, inside and outside! If you like animals, Jackie´s farm is like a dream.
We also got along with everyone really well! Especially Jackie is quite funny and we had many late night talks and there is never a silent car ride with her! She even helped us get to our next stop and connected us to some friends of hers, we couldn´t be more thankful.
All in all we can honestly say we had a blast at Jackies. The month we were staying basically flew by and it only felt like a week by the time we were leaving.
