Hi!
We're Cal & Emma, we're currently travelling and working in Japan, taking a year out before we set up our own glass blowing workshop when we get home.
We are both Glass Artists (ガラス職人) from the UK.

Cal is from Wales and Emma is from England. We finished studying a Masters degree in London in 2025 and working at a university in the south of England. We met studying in our bachelors degrees eight years ago and we've been working together ever since. Cal did Workaway a few years ago and it was amazing! So we wanted to do it together.

We love travelling and have been fortunate to have worked in Glass Studios all over the world, even on a tiny tropical island in the Maldives!

We love nature, hiking, movies, but most of all making things! We draw, we paint, we carve, we sew, we weld, whatever it is if it means using our hands and learning something we love it.

We're pretty well versed in all things hospitality and retail. We have both had multiple years working in various jobs across the hospitality and retail sector on top of our glass careers. We've worked in coffee shops and cafes, shops, bars and pubs and in a 5* resort hotel.

We have a Working Holiday Visa and international driving licenses and want to experience life in Japan as much as we can, meet lots of new friends and exchange culture with people. We're open to all types of work and we want to see parts of Japan off the beaten path.

Were very interested in learning as much Japanese as possible! Emma used to live in Denmark and found the only way to learn was to immerse yourself. We would love to teach and practice English with people as we are native speakers. We have extensive experience working with second language English speakers and lots of experience with teaching art workshops.

We are both Glass makers by training and professionally for the last almost 10 years. We've worked making glass, teaching classes and demonstrating our craft to the public all over the world. Working in, and running small workshops means you have to be very practical and learn new skills fast! Running a studio on a remote island in the Maldives meant we had to be pretty self sufficient, self motivated and happy to have a go at anything!

Here are some of our skills that you can put to good use:

Working with people:
We've taught hundreds of people from all over the world, we love meeting people and were good at talking to people of all backgrounds and all ages. We have a lot of experience working with small close groups on projects and it can be super rewarding.

Building and Making:
We've built all sorts of equipment and tools, furnaces, furniture, lighting etc. We are both comfortable using hand and power tools, have experience with most types of welding, some joinery and some blacksmithing. We've been practicing artists for 10 years so you name it we've tried it.

Cooking:
Calum loves to cook, always trying new recipes and techniques.

General Help!:
Most of all were keen to help! Carrying, cleaning, digging, sweeping, painting, dog walking, babysitting, whatever it is were happy to help and we love learning new things.

We had an amazing time in Yakushima. It was our first real workaway in Japan and we couldn't have chosen a better one to start with. We stayed for 6 weeks and really felt like we got to explore and get to know the island. All the staff were so great and really made us feel welcome, a particular thank you to Mari who isn't based on Yakushima but … read more was our guide-from-afar and main point of contact throughout the stay; making sure we were happy, giving recommendations and assigning tasks. We had a great experience and communication was excellent right from the beginning.

The accommodation was fantastic, we were in a shared house with one other person, it had everything we needed, was clean and well looked after, and when we did need something all we had to do was ask. The house is in a small town, walkable to the supermarket, two onsen, a couple of bakeries and cafes, it has everything you might need but is definitely on the quiet side!

The tasks for us mainly consisted of helping at the village, it is an organic farm so lots of weeding to be done! It was physical work, especially if it was raining or very hot, but it is an incredibly beautiful place and it was very relaxing to be working outside. We spent a lot of time weeding the tea field and the butterfly house, but we also did some cleaning, pollinating passionfruit flowers, cutting back and clearing nearby roads, and removing spiderwebs. The staff were always very clear on what needed to be done and we were expected to be self motivated and get on with it.

On days we weren't helping at the village we would have cleaning tasks, or record videos and create guides for other volunteers, or make content for social media and the blog. It was all very flexible and always felt like a reasonable amount of work, we generally did 4-5 days a week. In return we got our groceries reimbursed, as well as accommodation and the use of electric bikes and it definitely felt fair. We also got the chance to visit the school and have lunch and chat with the students a couple of times, which was really fun and very interesting.

The island itself is incredible, we did as much hiking as we could, went swimming, and hired kayaks. It has many beautiful mountains and excellent walking trails, as well as a lot of great onsen. Definitely try and hike Mt Miyanoura, the scenery above the treeline is totally unique and stunning, also the onsen right by the sea, soaking while the waves crash so close to you is definitely a unique experience! We bought an English language trail map from the hiking store in Anbo and it helped us find so many great spots, definitely worth it. We had so many amazing experiences we could go on forever. In short you should definitely definitely come to Yakushima.
