  • Description

Hello! My name is Devon and I'm from Vancouver, Canada! I find learning new skills and weird little talents extremely fulfilling and I love connecting with people over their passions. When people start talking about the things that excite them, I can't help but match that energy. Because of this, I've found myself with many ways to spend my time. From woodworking to rock climbing and computer programming to sewing, I'm always looking for new ways to challenge my brain and body.

I'm travelling through Australia mostly because I wanted to avoid working full-time straight out of university. I'd just done 5 years of engineering and I felt a change of scenery would help me remove myself from the rat race mentality and help me reconnect with the things I actually enjoy.

From travelling so far, I've learned the importance of genuine connection with people and the joy that comes from sharing ideas and experiences with them. It's also helped me value my time and identify work I find fulfilling. I'm stoked to continue these themes while here on Workaway.

  • More details about your skills

I've recently graduated mechanical engineering but I gained most of my hands on experience from the jobs I did to get me through school. Here are some of my skills from those.

    Summer Camp Coordinator
    - teaching children and adults how to kayak
    - organizing events for kids 5-12
    - maintaining safety of groups of 30+

    Academic Tutor
    - 1 on 1 tutoring with students aged 13-18
    - teaching highschool level math, physics, chemistry

    Construction Labourer
    - lifting heavy items
    - using power tools
    - loading and driving manual trucks
    - installing plasterboard and doing minor plaster repairs
    - installing temporary fencing and wooden hoardings
    - operating machinery

As far as hobbies go, I've taken up sewing as a way to extend the life of my clothing (which I've learned is especially handy while travelling) and have built up some general around-the-house knowledge to fix things like sticky drawers, wobbly stools and broken refrigerators. I've also helped my parents with renovating their house which involved painting walls and ceilings with rollers and spray guns, installing and finishing decking, and making custom shelves and workbenches.
