  • Description

Daniel has been working on and running organic farms in Canada full time for the past several years, and has experience with nearly all aspects of farming—vegetables/fruit/herbs/food forests/raising chickens and goats/composting/permaculture. I have all the fundamental skills of seeding, planting, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, row covering, seed saving, etc. Hannah is an Ayurvedic Counselor/Registered Nurse/Hatha Yoga teacher with interests in herbalism, cheese-making, organic farming, and all things shamanic.

We both have a deep love and interest in plants, nature and ecology and are passionate about the notions of food security, community and connecting with the land and all the other living things with whom we share the land. Doing all that we can to protect ecosystems and saving the earth is our primary objective at the moment.

Neither of us have volunteered through the Workaway platform yet, but In the winter and spring of 2023, Daniel volunteered on farms in 5 European countries, including farms run by friends as well as a couple of great hosts on a different platform: Domacija Novak in Slovenia, where he was mostly helping to prepare garden beds for the season using biodynamic techniques as well as planting/replanting and mulching some trees, and some sustainable wild foraging. Daniel also volunteered at Gurrane in County Kerry, Ireland, the first time he has ever worked on a dairy farm, where he was helping to muck out the barn stalls where the cows were, and wash out the milking station, as well as doing a lot of transplanting, harvesting and weeding in the garden.

Meanwhile in 2019-2020, Daniel also started up a mini-farm in southern France with a former colleague, helped with the construction of a straw bale house (1000 Paillies), which has just received a sustainability award, and doing some fruit and vegetable farming at the Jardin des Antipodes in Menton, a stunning place doing some amazing things, also in southern France.

More details about my language interests
Other languages don't come easy to me, but gosh darn it, I keep trying to learn them, particularly when I'm staying in a country that speaks a foreign language for an extended time period. I would be able to teach English to others, which I have done in the past, though not for a number of years. I don't speak any other language well enough to be able to teach, but I would be keen to learn at least a basic vocabulary in any language.

  • More details about your skills

I have been working on and running organic farms in Canada full time for the past several years, and have experience with nearly all aspects of farming—vegetables/fruit/herbs/food forests/raising chickens and goats/composting/permaculture. I have all the standard skills of seeding, planting, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, row covering, seed saving, etc.

I have also recently gained experience preparing beds in a biodynamic style, pruning orchards, helping out on a dairy farm, helping out on a couple of seed farms, and most recently was working as an apprentice on an Ayurveda/herbalism farm. And I enjoy doing any and all of the above.

I'm a first-time workawayer, but I have received a number of positive references on my Helpx profile if you'd like to see any: https://helpx.net/account?section=reviewsreceived

    47 & 42

  • What else ...

Many of my hobbies involve outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling and snowshoeing and birdwatching and just being in the presence of flora and fauna. I also have a passion for yoga (both the asanas and the philosophy as well as karma yoga) and just recently completed my yoga teacher training. I have a dream in the not-too-distant future to have my own land where I could farm and build a sustainable community and host retreats, ideally in a way that would be accessible to people of all incomes and walks of life.
