I am currently doing graphic design work for a non-profit, and while I love what I do, am hoping to spend a larger part of my days in the outdoors.

I love to create art, and can paint, draw, sew, and collage. I have a degree in environmental design and specialize in urban planning. I am skilled in digital rendering, small animations, hand drafting, and creating educational materials. I have worked with Maine DEP to address exacerbated coastal erosion and can manage interdisciplinary meetings and collaborative projects. I am experienced in trail restoration and re-vegetation techniques from my time with the Washington Conservation Corps, and am happy to spend hours outdoors in the rain, sun and hale. I worked as a camp counselor, and have experience teaching, creating lessons, and organizing activities. I love bouldering, mountaineering, kickboxing and learning new languages.

What else ...

I enjoy working outdoors and have spent months on trail crews in Washington, removing invasive plants and improving irrigation. I love sailing small boats and am proficient in a canoe or kayak. My bike is one of my primary methods of transportation, and as such, I am very interested in bike mechanics and repair work.

I had a great time at Ingrid's. She was clear and very helpful about the yard and garden work, and her house is beautiful. The area was great to explore, and I had a good time meeting Ingrid's friends and neighbors.

The farm location has changed since the description was posted. It is on the side of the highway across from a gas station and restaurant. The buses to the beach are very close but you have to be very careful as you run across the highways. There is a good amount of trash at the camp and volunteers live in tents. Thank you, Claire, for your comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the route through Scotland and the lochs, the chance to explore marinas and seaside towns, and of course our regular Taco Tuesdays.

That said, I want to reiterate for everyone that life on a traditional 35-ft sailing vessel is not a holiday — it’s communal living in close quarters. … read more Instagram may highlight the relaxing side of sailing, but the reality is hands-on: everyone shares in cooking, cleaning, sail handling, and care of the boat and pets. These are simply part of living well together in a small space. With three or four people aboard, tidying and organizing is a daily task.

I understand this may have felt like more work than expected, but that is the nature of sailing — it is always more involved than it looks from the outside. For example, we hadn’t anticipated needing to explain pet-care basics, but this experience showed us the importance of making it clear for everyone up front. We’ve since moved the litter box out of the crew cabin to a ventilated shelter on deck where it can be more easily monitored (because as captain I don't enter the crew cabin unless requested). I do wish you had raised this during the trip — it could have been resolved immediately. For any crew, speaking up about concerns directly while aboard is the best way to keep things positive; waiting until later doesn’t help the team and undermines the cooperative spirit we strive for.

We do welcome and teach beginners — many of our best crew arrived with little or no prior experience. But honesty about one’s background is essential. Stating you are already a sailor sets expectations, and if there’s a mismatch between stated skills and what’s needed, it can create strain — especially at times when I am counting on a stronger first mate. I’m known for patience and instruction (as many reviews reflect), but learning also requires focus, interest, and the ability to retain what has been shown after a few demonstrations. Crew who thrive on board are those who enjoy hands-on tasks, problem-solving, and being actively engaged.

Not every sailing experience is the right fit for every person, and that’s perfectly fine. I hope you find other adventures better suited to your interests and skill set, and take some of these lessons forward into future opportunities. For anyone considering joining us, please read through our many other reviews to see the fuller picture: adventurous, hands-on, and deeply rewarding for those who are adaptable, eager to learn, and ready to be part of a team.
