Description
Hello! My name is Brielle. I am from a small ski town in Montana, USA. My passion is traveling, learning new cultures and connecting with people. I have a Bachelors in Environmental Studies with a minor in International Development studies. I am a TEFL certified English teacher and have taught English in Costa Rica as well as online. The first time I ever volunteered was in 2015 and I WWOOF'ed in Norway and Ireland. Most recently I used Workaway in 2024 to volunteer on farms in Romania and hostels in Georgia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. This time I am traveling to Australia on a WHV, and while I plan to work eventually, I would really love to volunteer first and gain a more authentic and rich experience.

I am a jack of all trades. Currently, I am back in my hometown, saving money and working 5 different jobs. I am a barista at a coffee shop, I am a general laborer for a construction company, I work in customer service at a local gym, I teach English online when I have the time and I babysit an energetic 8 year old boy a few nights a week.
Previous experience includes teaching English in Costa Rica and volunteering in several countries, such as, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Norway, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Georgia.
I volunteered on organic farms through WWOOF in Norway and Ireland.

I spent 5 weeks here. The accommodation was okay, I lived in an 8 person mixed dorm (no privacy curtain). The hostel only provides these heavy blankets for guests with no sheets and they do not wash these blankets for well over a month. I watched two volunteers stay here for 4 weeks and when they left the cleaning woman laid the blankets over a… read more rail in the sun for 5 minutes, folded them back up, and put them right back on the bed. I asked for my own sheet to put under my blanket. Thankfully I did not have to change beds during my stay and I did feel comfortable in my shared dorm room. The wifi works pretty well in the hostel and I was able to use my computer in most rooms. The showers are hit and miss, but most days I had hot water. Also I noticed the women’s shower was never cleaned once during my stay. By the end of 5 weeks there was lots of hair and shampoo on the walls.

The best part of this experience was meeting guests from all over the world. I had a lot of fun getting to know so many interesting travelers and playing lots of card games at night.
While I was here, there were also two other volunteers, a German and Italian couple. And they were honestly one of the best parts of my experience here. One was a chef and we hosted hostel dinner nights which were always successful and delicious!
Puebla is a big city and there are lots of things to see while walking around. The weather is really nice, warm during the day but cool at night. I should add that the nights are typically a little chilly. (at least in October)

Luis the manager was very nice and willing to listen to any problems I had throughout my stay. Luis was always busy doing what looked like a dozen different things. I really appreciate how he attempted to resolve any problems we were having with the hostel or the staff. I know some of the days were really hard, due to how the staff treated me, and I’m thankful that Luis tried his best and was kind.

I only wish that the manager would have asked me how my stay was at the end and asked me for any input I had. I felt like my time and willingness to make a positive contribution to this hostel was completely wasted. One big red flag that didn’t sit right in my stomach was how the owner did not acknowledge the volunteers or try to interact with them at all.
I genuinely feel like my time here was pointless, and I would only recommend this place if the hostel makes serious improvements to how they treat volunteers and communicate with them.
I should add that this wasn’t how I felt at the beginning, it took about 2 weeks before I felt this way. I was hoping things would get better but they never did.

I think it is important for any future volunteers to be aware of how long it will take to initiate new projects or ideas you might have at the beginning. You might think something will start next week but that could very well mean next month or next year. The biggest issue I had with my stay was how the staff communicated with the volunteers and the overall attitude of certain staff. Not everyone was difficult, but there were a few that really made me question volunteering here. Some days were definitely easier than others, and I learned by the end to keep communication to a minimum with problematic staff.

I know my experience is just one of many and this month could have been more difficult for the staff here. Maybe they were making more internal changes or their personal lives were more hectic. All I know is my experience. And I will live my life being perfectly happy never setting foot in this place again.

As I write this, I noticed I am the first solo female to write a public review about their experience at this hostel. I am not sure why that is, but if you are a solo female traveler just be aware that the communication issues I had might have been shared with past volunteers who decided to leave their experience unwritten.
