I am a teacher, so a lot of my skills are much less physical. However, I grew up doing lots of yardwork and chores all the time and I have a really good attitude towards work. It brings a lot of fulfillment.

Andrew was such a boast to our dairy! It wasn’t just his continuous help with our many farm tasks , although those were invaluable! All done with thoughtfulness and in a timely fashion. The gift Andrew gave us was his cheerful encouraging demeanor ! His interactions with us and other volunteers, many times, made our day.

Living at this place is truly a privilege which I enjoyed deeply. The people, the animals, and the place all left a deep mark on me.

Leroi, Nancy, and Liz are truly welcoming, and it wasn’t 24-hours before I felt incredibly at home in the kitchen with them and the other volunteers. They are so funny and knowledgable. They don’t often volunteer … read more information, but if you ask questions, they will eagerly share from their incredible minds. And Liz crafted me and my girlfriend, who wasn’t even on the farm, the most beautiful bookmarks you’ve ever seen as a gift. They are truly special people. I was also blessed with incredibly special volunteers to work beside. We made so many memories.

The animals are wonderful, especially the herding dogs and the goats. I was there in March-April, so there were so many adorable kids, AND a new puppy, and I LOVED socializing with them and holding them… I got to know each one’s unique personality and love them all.

Finally it really is spectacular out there. You can see for hundreds of miles from certain spots on the property. It’s so remote and silent, and with everyone in their own cabin, you have such peaceful evenings for reading or watching stars. My heart felt much more at peace being there. I very much miss the soft desert breeze, the red rocks, the bird sounds, and the space. I felt like I could have lived in that cabin forever.

So all in all, I truly recommend this place, and think you’ll love it there, but I do have to acknowledge the biggest critiques of the farm I saw in the reviews. First was having to leave my car behind. It was stressful and I felt weird about being stranded, but the road actually IS seriously difficult and only a high-clearance, 4WD vehicle with all-terrain tires could make it. It takes well over an hour just to get from the dairy to the car parking. My car was totally safe when I returned to it. Secondly, because you are in a desert, relying on water catchments, there is limited water use, which also means you will have to lower your standards of cleanliness. If you fear germs or hate being dirty, you probably won’t enjoy this as much as I did. Finally, you just have to be clear about staking out your free time; if you don’t set boundaries on time you can easily end up working MANY hours in a week. Still I worked probably 50 hours a week and I don’t regret it a bit. If you do your part and participate in farm life you will find yourself rewarded far more than anything you put into it.

An internship with Roy will change the way you think and see the world. After my girlfriend had a really special time interning at the farm, we had so many conversations and I knew I had to come and work for Roy, too.

It’s hard work, and very rewarding to learn how to take care of the animals and take that over so Roy can get to more long term … read more projects. Still, the times you get to work together and get free lectures on anything from nuclear war to the intricate relationships of living things to the way your body works were always so enjoyable to me. Roy is possibly the most knowledgable and intelligent person I’ve ever met, and it really is a special opportunity to work beside him. He also lives according to his belief, and he’s one of the few men I can truly say that I deeply respect.

Roy would work more efficiently without a volunteer living on property, because he’s very fast at doing the work himself, but the sooner you get up to speed and learn tasks, the sooner you can truly help contribute to the operations of the farm. Roy has an intern on the farm to teach them his way of seeing the world and preparing them for the future decline of the industrial system and living in a world where things really matter. His excitement is palpable when he talks about this, and it really is his life mission to align himself with life and help teach others how to do this as well.

Roy is very hospitable and Siena is a joy to be around. The animals, too, are treated with respect and generally do the same back to you. The intern’s trailer is super nice and I felt super at home there… one of the nicest places I’ve ever lived. Stunning scenery as well. And while I ended up working much more than your average 25-hours-a-week, it was because I wanted to help Roy’s mission… if you had other things to do on a given day, you just have to let him know and there are no awkward scenarios regarding work hours.

I would like to make it clear that Roy is here to teach and to work beside you. If you do not like work and you have no interest in widening your understanding of the world, you will probably not enjoy this farm. But if you do, then it could truly be transformative for you, as it was for me. I’m very grateful to Roy and recommend this farm wholeheartedly. I could spend years there and not stop learning.

I stayed with Jon for two weeks. I learned so much! I enjoyed the days where I had a million questions and he so patiently answered them all (he's a well of information!) and I also loved the days where we quietly worked together, knocking the olives out of the tree or listening to his fantastic collection of music.

Andrew stayed here for a couple of weeks during the olive harvest.

He was very helpful and enthusiastic about the olive picking! He also helped with the compost, with planting, picking snails, collecting and shredding branches.

He's also both knowledgeable and curious and great company for me and the other volunteers!
