9 Underrated Countries to Escape The Crowds

When you’ve saved up your hard earned money to travel somewhere, the last thing you want is to arrive in a sea of tourists, queues and crowds. While we understand certain countries are popular for a reason, nothing is more rewarding than the road less travelled.

Here at Workaway we are on a mission to do things differently. We want travellers to stop counting countries and instead, embrace culture, connection and curiosity. This means, we not only champion cultural exchange and living like a local, but also about venturing off the beaten track.

What makes a country underrated?

Generally, a country is considered underrated when it does not receive as much attention or recognition from travellers as it potentially deserves. There are several factors that contribute to this, such as:

  • Limited Exposure: Put simply, this means less of a marketing budget. Countries that can afford glossy campaigns are more popular as it's easier to get word out. A lack of exposure can result in travellers being less aware of the country's attractions and offerings.
  • Negative Perceptions: Misconceptions or negative stereotypes about a country can deter tourists from visiting. Political instability, safety concerns, or outdated stereotypes can contribute to this issue. The worst part is, reality on the ground is usually quite different!
  • Proximity to Popular Destinations: There are a few countries on this list that are located near more famous tourist destinations so they’re overshadowed by their neighbours.
  • Lack of Infrastructure: Often the best places are tough to get to! Limited transportation options, inadequate tourism infrastructure, or challenging visa requirements can make it more difficult for travellers to visit, leading to lower tourism numbers.
  • Media Coverage: Positive or negative media coverage can significantly impact a country's reputation and tourism potential. Positive stories can attract travellers, while negative news can dissuade them.

10 Underrated Countries To Escape The Crowds

1. Georgia

Why it's underrated: Georgia sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia but remains under the radar for many travellers. The country shares its border with Azerbaijan, Russia, Armenia, and Turkey who often steal the limelight.

Most parts of Georgia are perfectly safe to visit however, it’s best to avoid South Ossetia which is on the Russian border (north of Tbilisi) and Abkhazia located in the far west bordering Russia and the Black Sea. These regions are occupied by Russia so have unfortunately been the target of conflict in recent years.

Sadly, due to this many tourists tarnish Georgia with the misconception the entire country is unsafe. This is not true and the country has so much to offer!

After all that adventure, why not relax in the country’s natural hot springs. The sulphur baths in the Abanotubani neighbourhood of Tbilisi are particularly special. Another fun way to relax in Georgie is with a budget-friendly but beautiful glass of wine! Georgia is said to be the oldest wine-making country in the world with the tradition of using egg-shaped clay jars (called qvevri) dating back over 8,000 years!

From the towering Caucasus Mountains to the pristine Black Sea coastline, there is so much to love about the hidden gem of Georgia. Best of all, with over 50 Workaway hosts across the country it could not be easier to explore like a local and learn the true beauty of this nation instead of what the media makes us believe.

2. Mongolia

Why it's underrated: Despite being one of the cheapest countries in Asia Mongolia remains relatively new to tourism. This is partly because it’s one of the world's least densely populated countries and particularly because of the country’s vast, untouched wilderness and unique nomadic culture.

As the world’s highest country with an elevation of 5280ft, and nestled between Russia and China it’s also not the most accessible. There are very few hotels which may also put tourists off. However, instead of hotels, you can enjoy a once in a lifetime experience - staying in a Mongolian tribal yurt - known as gers!

Worth visiting for: Between the budget-friendly yurt stays, the Gobi Desert, and the opportunity to experience traditional Mongolian hospitality you could say staying in Mongolia is a bucket list experience and one that you can embrace with ease thanks to Workaway! By staying with a host family in Mongolia not only will you spend less and learn more, but it will provide you with an authentic experience like no other.

If the yurt stays and desert adventures haven’t persuaded you yet, perhaps the wildlife will. Mongolia is a haven for wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, Gobi bear, and wild Bactrian camel. This means there are many Workaway experiences with animals that are conservation or farming focused, allowing travellers to make furry friends in this incredible country.

3. Uzbekistan

Why it's underrated: This Central Asian gem is often bypassed for more well-trodden Silk Road destinations, but it boasts remarkable architecture, bazaars, and ancient history. Some argue that complicated visa rules and Soviet-era controls are the reason why tourism hasn’t taken off here.

However, in recent times the country has done wonders to improve this reputation, so if you want to visit an underrated country before the rest of the world catches on, now is your chance!

Worth visiting for: As a former Soviet republic, the country is celebrated for its breathtaking Islamic architecture, showcasing lavishly adorned madrasas, mausoleums, and mosques.

Beyond the historical sites, the country boasts insane natural beauty. From the desert landscapes of Kyzylkum and Karakum to the lush Fergana Valley and the serene waters of Charvak Reservoir. This means it's a haven for outdoor adventures, including hiking, horseback riding, and desert safaris.

Uzbekistan is a melting pot of cultures, from Uzbek to Tajik, Kazakh, Russian, and more. Its diverse population means there are many hosts in Uzbekistan who need support with English, making it an incredible country to gain experience teaching abroad as a volunteer among other amazing workaway experiences.

4. Namibia

Why it's underrated: Namibia is a stunning destination with a lot to offer, but it may not receive many tourists for a few reasons. Firstly, due to its remote location there are limited direct flights. This makes it challenging to reach.

It also has a low population density so lacks bustling cities that usually attract tourists. Instead, travellers usually head for its neighbouring countries like South Africa which boasts a better established tourism infrastructure and a wider range of attractions.

Worth visiting for: Namibia's vast deserts, dramatic landscapes, and unique wildlife often go unnoticed, making it a hidden gem for adventurers. From safaris at Etosha National Park where you can spot the Big Five, to shipwrecks on the Skeleton Coast, this country is ideal for all kinds of thrill seekers. Not forgetting, we have nearly 20 hosts in Namibia who would love to welcome you!

For a truly unique adventure, especially for photography fans, visit the “ghost town” of Kolmanskop. Located in the Namib Desert near the town of Lüderitz, it was once a thriving diamond mining settlement. However, as diamond resources declined the town was abandoned, leaving behind well-preserved, sand-filled buildings that have been slowly consumed by the desert!

5. Jordan

Why it’s underrated: It’s no secret the media loves to dwell on the tension across the Middle East, but despite its location there, Jordan is a very safe country. Even for solo female travellers! You will find curious and welcoming locals and a country that feels world’s away from its neighbours, Syria and Iraq.

Worth visiting for: Jordan is not only home to the lowest point on earth (The Dead Sea) but also the Red Sea where you can explore vibrant coral reefs. The country boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with influences from ancient civilizations like the Nabateans, Romans, and Byzantines. It is a nation teeming with captivating historical landmarks, stunning desert views, and even laid back beach getaways.

You cannot miss the archaeological treasure of Petra (known as the rose city), an UNESCO World Heritage Site and celebrated as one of the Wonders of the World! While Petra is popular, there are many other lesser-known archaeological wonders in Jordan equally worthwhile visiting, such as Jerash, Umm Qais, and Karak Castle.

With over 80 hosts dotted around Jordan it could not be easier to explore this underrated country. From volunteering at Bedouin camps in the famous Wadi Rum area, to hostels needing your help with marketing and social media - the opportunities are endless!

6. Albania

Why it's underrated: Albania's turbulent history has deterred tourists for many decades, but it is slowly growing in popularity thanks to beautiful Adriatic beaches, ancient ruins, and a flourishing foodie scene.

Worth visiting for: Not only is Albania one of the cheapest countries in Europe, but it boasts a pristine landscape including the rugged Albanian Alps and tranquil lakes like Ohrid and Shkodra. It’s also home to many beautiful beaches along its 400 km coastline, most notably the area of Saranda.

Saranda boasts crystal-clear waters, stunning scenery, and a laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal escape for those searching for a budget friendly beach destination away from the crowds. Thanks to Workaway hosts in Saranda, you can stay in paradise without the price tag!

Workaway hosts in Albania  offer a range of opportunities, from homestays to hostels making it super easy to immerse yourself in the local way of life, savour traditional Albanian cuisine, and enjoy a unique travel experience.

As a tip, the Greek border is less than 30 miles South and Italy just a ferry ride away. Not forgetting you can live with locals in these dream destinations too as part of your Workaway membership!

7. Malawi

Why it’s underrated: Malawi is a landlocked developing country located in south east Africa. For a considerable time, a cruel combination of limited natural resources, inadequate infrastructure, rampant corruption, and widespread unemployment has consistently hindered the country's progress.

This means it remains one of the poorest nations in the world. This doesn’t mean you should ignore it - in fact, quite the opposite! There are so many amazing reasons to visit Malawi and why it’s well deserving to be on this list.

Worth Visiting for: One of the main reasons to visit Malawi, is the people. The country is known as the Warm Heart of Africa thanks to the friendly locals who will genuinely welcome you with a heartwarming smile.

As the country is located on Africa’s Great Rift Valley you can also expect a diverse terrain that ranges from high peaks to plateaus to expansive lakes. The country is home to Mount Mulanje, Lake Malawi, and Nyika National Park. Not to mention a variety of wild animals, including leopards, zebras, elephants, lions, and spotted hyenas.

Best of all, we have over 20 hosts in Malawi so you can visit this incredible country, make a meaningful difference and give back the right way.

8. Kyrgyzstan

Why it's underrated: Kyrgyzstan is a tiny nation in remote Central Asia. Some would argue it’s overlooked due to the size, others because it’s only been plotted on a map since 1924!

This means tourism is still relatively new here, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore crowd free. It should come with a warning however, once you visit you’ll battle whether to keep this hidden gem to yourself or tell everyone you know to visit!

Worth visiting for: Often dubbed as “the Switzerland of Asia,” Kyrgyzstan is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts with its rugged mountains, nomadic culture, and alpine lakes. Similar to Mongolia, Kyrgyz people are traditionally nomadic and with hosts dotted all over the country you too can learn how to live like a local and move with the seasons.

With 90% of its territory above 1,500 metres, Kyrgyzstan is also a haven for hikers.  There are over 88 major mountain ranges alone, most of which form the Tian Shan, often called the Celestial Mountains. For hiking superfans, the country is home to three peaks above 7000m - Khan Tengri, Jengish Chokusu and Lenin Peak.

9. Bhutan

Why it's underrated: Bhutan receives fewer visitors annually than any other country in Asia! This is because the country controls the number of foreign tourists who can visit based on a High Value, Low Impact policy.

Up until 2022, tourists to Bhutan were charged a daily tourist fee of $250 ($200 in the low season) everyday of their trip! While this sounds expensive, the fee covered food, accommodation, transport, guides and most of the other essentials tourists need for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. This means that in order to visit you’d need to book through an official tour operator.

The fees contributed to upgrading infrastructure, protecting the environment and creating jobs. However, Bhutan recently announced changes to this fee, to make access easier and more affordable. Now, travellers who pay the SDF for the first four days can stay an additional four days without paying the fee - among other discounts.

Worth visiting for: One stand out reason Bhutan features on this list is the country’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) policy. This means Instead of just looking at money and material things, Bhutan's leaders consider things like the environment, mental and physical health, education, and culture when planning for the country's future.

The country was entirely closed to visitors until 1974 so visiting here is incredibly special and feels like stepping back in time. Red-robed monks wander through ancient monasteries, locals stroll the streets in traditional dress, the hills tinkle with the ring of yak bells, and archery is still the national pastime.

If you’re an eco-warrior, Bhutan is a beacon of sustainability and preservation – both of environment and culture. Not only is it carbon neutral, but it’s also carbon negative, contributing to the country’s passion for low-impact tourism.

One of the most popular destinations within the country is Taktshang, a cliffside monastery. This is a sacred Buddhist temple that houses the cave where a Buddhist deity is believed to have fasted for 90 days in order to spread Buddhism throughout Bhutan.

As it’s SO underrated we don’t even have a host here (yet!) but couldn’t not mention Bhutan on our list. If you’re seeking affordable cultural immersion, stunning Himalayan scenery, and the unique experience of visiting a carbon-neutral country - Bhutan needs to be on your bucket list.
