We are a writer and artist and are trained and experienced in many natural medicines and therapies.
We grow vegetables and fruit, growing produce for our own family for the past 25 years. We also have fruit trees, 8 laying chickens (and a cat). We are almost self-sufficient for most of the year!
It's always useful if you have some practical experience and skills in growing, simple building, maintenance, simple carpentry (woodwork), etc
Or maybe you have interesting life experiences or knowledge, which would fit in with our own interests and experiences?
DIY and building projects
Help around the house
Perhaps you've always dreamed of having your own fruit and vegetable garden? If that's the case, we have a lot of experience to share.
We also grow a lot of medicinal and culinary herbs and are experienced in the use of herbs and in making herbal tinctures, so you might be interested in learning about that. We cook a wide range of food, particularly authentic Middle Eastern and Indian food; if you haven't tried food like that, you'll get the opportunity by staying with us!
We also like to enjoy ourselves and not make life difficult - we have a dishwasher and (but only in the winter) central heating and go on holiday every year (often to the Far East - India or Thailand). Yes, of course we travel by plane when we go away! We have been 'doing our bit' for the environment for many years: conservation and low usage of resources is part of our daily lives!
We've been hosting volunteers here since 2005, so have a lot of experience with the process of host/volunteer interaction.
We have been been environmental campaigners since the early 1980's and think what we're doing here is very important - there are many organic farms, but very few people with the tenacity and drive to be self-sufficient. If everyone grew their own food, people would be a lot healthier and there would be much less pressure on global energy, water and land resources.
This is why, incidentally, we have no interest in the so-called 'Extinction Rebellion': we feel it is merely increasing young people's feeling of helplessness and hopelessness and continuing to foster the idea that all our problems can only be solved by an amorphous 'they' (governments or businesses). The power to change the world is in all our hands - grow (at least some of) our own food; buy organic food; stop buying imported, out-of-season fruit and vegetables; consume much less (particularly buying expensive mobile phones); keep so-called 'social media' usage to a minimum (those platforms and websites require vast, energy-guzzling computer server farms); keep ourselves optimally healthy (thus saving the vast cost and impact of 'conventional' health systems); plant trees! Etc ...
Gardening, some wood chopping, a little housework and cooking and also general maintenance and simple carpentry. If you also really like - and have skills in - simple electrical tasks or even 2 stroke engine maintenance, we're happy for you to help us with that!
For 2020 we need help with digging - removing a large amount of bamboo, This is quite a heavy task so, if you feel like getting some serious exercise, you might like to help with that!
I also need help with indexing and categorising a lot of articles which I use as reference material for a book I’m writing on the global food system!
A bedroom in the house, or camping in the Summer (we have a large tent).
We live in West Dorset, southern England, with views of the countryside and sea (20 minutes walk away - our volunteers often go to the beach in the afternoon) or for walks in the amazing countryside!
