Description
Hey friends 🌟 Thank you for visiting our Workaway page.
We are a not-for-profit project focused on ecological and cultural regenerative experiences. Over the years, we have hosted programmes revolving around topics such as ecosystem restoration, permaculture, yoga, meditation, dance, art, music, men's and women's work, deep ecology, nature connection, primitive survival skills and rites of passage.
We reside on the precious lands of the Gulli-Bul people of the Bundjalung Nation, which we seek to care for and restore. Coming here, you'll see why, as you find yourself on a scenic mountain nestled in The Border Ranges and surrounded by ancient Gondwana sub-tropical rainforest. Historically, the mountain was once home to a Tibetan Buddhist community and still features buildings from that time, including the treasured Gonpa (temple) and various small statues all around the property, reminding us of the Buddha’s teachings.
We currently have a fantastic, dedicated core team of 9 living on the mountain. Each team member comes from a different background and brings their own personal passions here, but what unites us is our shared commitment and enthusiasm for community, nature, earth-arts, and making a positive impact through social change.
We eat communally and share stories and laughter on a daily basis. Out of respect to our Buddhist history, the kitchen is strictly vegan/vegetarian - there’s always something delicious being cooked up for volunteers by our kitchen crew. Finally, we prioritise care for wildlife by being a pet-free space.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Here you will be involved in land care projects, restoring koala habitat, waterways and degraded biodiversity. You will participate in the installation and maintenance of agroecology systems for food production and be immersed in a unique eco-community with an interesting Buddhist heritage. Additionally, you may choose to participate in a range of workshops and events that are held here on topics such as indigenous approaches to land management, sustainable building and technologies, community and relationship building, multi-arts, mindfulness, meditation and more.
This means you will learn about living in community and living 'off-grid'. This place has a vibrant culture of critical dialogue and creative expression whilst attending to practical eco-restoration and agroecology projects. We care deeply about the wellbeing of communities and individuals. We also love engaging in cultural practices like sharing circles and collaborative leadership (if you’re curious, we can send you some resources on the topic of 'cultural practices' ahead of your stay to get you in the groove). You might also be interested to learn from the resident retreat team members about their experience in setting up a not for profit eco-retreat centre or have the chance to glean some earth wisdom from our team members in permaculture, alternative technologies, botany and healthy lifestyle practices.
Finally, without a doubt, one of the greatest memories you will take from your time here is getting to know the Australian bush, the wildlife and the plants!Help
For a unique 1 - 3 month experience, we are seeking volunteers who are a good fit with all that this place is and stands for. This means being community-minded, dedicated to restoration and/or general operational efforts, self-aware, keen to learn and make a positive impact while here. There is a one-week trial period implemented to ensure a happy and positive experience for all involved. Following this trial period, monthly reviews will be held, again to ensure the happiness of all.
As we strive to unlock all the potential that this place has to offer, there is always a lot to do. Common tasks include:
- Food growing (permaculture, syntropic agroforestry and nursery tasks)
- Grounds maintenance
- Regeneration land care
- General help when preparing for events
- Beautification of our space (creating art, interior design, landscaping)
- And of course, cleaning
We offer 4 - 5 hours of help, 5 days per week in exchange for cabin tent accommodation and three nourishing, tasty meals a day (we eat locally and organically as much as possible). However, our offering really includes a lot more than just food and shelter; it's one of authentic nature and community-immersion, personal growth, as well as time, space and support to explore your passions.Languages
