    Description

We are excited to host workawayers on our 10-acre property in a beautiful part of western Manitoba. I (Morag) spent a few years workawaying in my early 20's, and now that I'm in a position to host, I'm so excited to share our property and welcome people to our area. My partner, Amy, and I purchased this mostly forested property in 2024 and have big dreams for building out a trail system, fixing up the outbuildings and putting in an orchard and large garden. There is plenty of work to be done around the property, and lots of beautiful nature activities in the area that we can't wait to share. We are 20 minutes from the nearest city (Brandon) and 25 minutes to Spruce Woods Provincial Park.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our place is perfect for any outdoor-lovers looking to enjoy the slower pace of country living. We are in a rural area and have lots of room on our property to enjoy nature. Our property is full of biodiversity and we often have deer walking by our windows, and many birds singing in the trees.

Nearby (25 mins) we have Spruce Woods Provincial Park that has many great trails for hiking and biking, including the Spirit Sands trail with sand dunes. We both work full-time jobs but we love indoor and outdoor hobbies in our free time. We have an archery set-up, lots of craft supplies and tons of outdoor lawn games and activities. We have a wide variety of skills that we are happy to teach from gardening to canning to soap making or basic bushcraft - and we always love to learn more! When I was a workawayer, one of my favourite parts was getting to meet new people from different cultures and to spend time learning from each other.

  • Help

    Help

We are looking for help both around the property and the house. Depending on the time of year, and what projects are going on help could be varied. Work would be 4-5 hours a day up to 5 days a week.

Outdoor tasks could include: collecting deadfall (wood) from around the property, chopping wood, cleaning/clearing trails, exterior log home and outbuilding maintenance (cleaning, weatherproofing), helping with the garden, helping fix up some of our outbuildings and mowing. Indoor tasks could include deep cleaning, cooking, preserving food (canning or dehydrating) and basic renovations.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We currently can offer tent accommodation where we can provide the tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag/pillow. We are also renovating the basement, where there will be a finished guest room later in 2025 to host workawayers indoors. We are also able to host people who are bringing their own campervan to sleep in as there is plenty of space to park one.

I am both gluten free and vegetarian, but Amy is not. Mostly we cook vegetarian food, but we do keep meat in the house. Breakfast and lunch would be self-serve, with dinner typically being a shared meal.

    What else ...

There is a shuttle service that runs daily between Winnipeg and our closest town where we could pick you up. We are about a 2-hour drive west of Winnipeg. If you don’t have your own transport, we can provide rides into Brandon sometimes if you want to spend a day off in the city. During the summer there are often local town fairs and events in small towns nearby on weekends as well.

We are an LGBTQ+ household and we also have an indoor cat who is very cuddly. I (Morag) work from home, so I will be around typically during the days.
