    Description

Nestled on Southern Vancouver Island, in the Cowichan Valley, short drive to Shawnigan Lake and the ocean. 12 acres of forest, established off grid 3000 sq ft home and art studio with permaculture gardens. We work in community with our neighbours to restore and preserve the natural peat bog habitat on our land and are actively involved in forest management. We are here to build community, share our home, and knowledge of off grid systems, in exchange for the physically demanding help associated with various land restoration projects. We are artists and educators; passion for art, and art curious folk are welcome! We have experience hosting international students and artists, love to cook and learn about newcultures. I am a full time teacher and my husband runs the homestead. We have a private room for a single person or couple. We have the space, potential, and desire to build private small off-grid cabins with the right skilled and motivated individual(s). We are remote and not isolated; 40 minutes to Victoria in the South or Nanaimo to the North. Bonus: our small fluffy dog likes to help forage for mushrooms; though she often hasn’t a clue what shes searching for, a work in progress.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are part of a small and mighty community of folks experienced in agriculture, foraging, art, education and leadership training. We value cultural exchange and are life long learners who love good conversation around meals and sharing our experience and knowledge with others. We work hard and play hard! We are part of a local arts (music and art) community and can connect interested Workawayers with off the property opportunities through them if/when desired.

    What else ...

We are off the ‘beaten path’ so to speak, so you must be ok with time on your own and limited access to city amenities. Transportation to and from town can be arranged as we are not on a bus route (having your own vehicle is strongly recommended). We are 40 minutes from Victoria (to the south) and Nanaimo (to the north). As locals to the island, we can also guide you to many beautiful ‘secret’ places to explore! We can set up space for artists to make art in our home studio (you bring/acquire your own supplies).

    Can possibly accept pets

Your pet must be fully trained and stay close to home as there are wolf packs and other animals nearby. Also must be friendly to a small fluffy dog that is nervous around big dogs.
