Teaching: Volunteers teach at local schools a signed to by the hosting project, where English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Creative Arts are taught. Volunteers may also train children on sports like football, netball and other outdoor activities.

Feeding program: Volunteers can prepare breakfast such as porridge for the children, most of whom live in poverty and often arrive at school hungry. This would be prepared at the school kitchen.

Building: Currently we are in the process of building a children's playground, a fence and a library for the school, but we are lacking funds and expertise. If any volunteers are willing to help, our community would be greatly appreciative.

Gardening & Farming: Because of the change in weather patterns, many of the local crops, which provide income for the families, have been dying or not growing well. Volunteers are asked to plant trees and other crops such as maize and papaw, etc in the school gardens.

Eco project: There is no rubbish collection system on Rusinga Island, and thus pollution is spoiling the natural environment and destroying the growing potential of the food crops. Volunteers may participate in this project by cleaning up the polluted areas and installing rubbish bins.

Help with Computers / internet: Most of the students at these schools have never used a computer before, however these computer literacy skills are essential for future use in higher education and in their careers, as well as their everyday life. It is appreciated if volunteers can set up computer literacy lessons at the school.

Health: Volunteers are asked to advocate the importance of health and hygiene, eg. through treated water and vessels for washing hands. The local medical centre also has limited medical supplies so any medical donations ( eg. bandages from first aid kit) would be valued.

  • Accommodation

Volunteers will share a home with the host, in Nyanza Province in Kenya. You will receive a private bedroom with a bed and a mosquito net. However, if you wish, you can carry your own.

There is also a volunteer house which can house up to 5 volunteers with beds, although it is recommended that volunteers should also bring their sleeping bags.

    What else ...

Rusinga is a beautiful island rich in wildlife such as monkeys, hippos, birds, and antelopes. It is also close to Ruma National Park. While staying in Rusinga, volunteers will be exposed to local cultures and traditions, and plenty of local hospitality.
