    Description

We have no winter work, looking for starting in April for 2 week stays.

We are a working flower farm! We grow flowers and small fruit for market and local shops. See our website for more information on what we do at hummingbirdfarmbc.com Please note we do not accept couples, but single travellers only, no pets permitted.

We are located on the amazing Slocan River, 30 minutes from Nelson, BC. The work in the spring and fall is lots of garden clean up, weeding, digging, dividing and moving perennials, bed prep. Hard but satisfying physical labour! Work in July is fruit picking (raspberries) primarily.

There are lots of outdoor activities to do here including kayaking, hiking, swimming, biking or floating on the river! We have kayaks and bikes that you can use. The summers are pretty hot and dry so jumping in the river at the end of the day is a must! The location is very private and peaceful. We of course have hummingbirds and a lot of other wildlife in the area including lots of varieties of birds, deer, elk, fish and the occasional black bear.

Note on housing included free with your stay. Accommodation is a 26 travel trailer, dedicated to your private use in your own private space, fully furnished with fully stocked kitchen of appliances, dishes, etc. All linens provided. WIFI, and laundry. Basic pantry supplies included such as spices, oil, etc including but you are responsible for your own food and cooking.

Note on pay... We pay for a min of 24 hours per week, but may have up to 35 hours per week available. Pay is British Columbia minimum wage rate of $17.85 per hour. You can work 4 to 7 hours a day to fill the time in the week. We are flexible! No other volunteer time expected. You must be legally able to work in Canada. Please reach out with questions!

You will have the chance to learn about flower and fruit farming. You will experience the 'Wilds of BC' and the realities of rural farm living! This will be a chance to slow down to spend time reading and relaxing in nature and working outdoors. Lots of opportunities for outdoor sports right from the farm, and if you have a vehicle, there are amazing provincial parks in the region with awesome hiking trails.

Ride shares are the best way to get to Nelson, or fights to Castlegar. We can pick you up for your first day from either location. After that, you can catch a local bus to the nearest town, it goes a few times a day to Nelson BC, but it is a 4 km walk to the bus stop. A car is best. It is however important to remember that this is rural living, it is NOT a city experience and we have noticed that for some folks this posses a challenge of the slowness of it all if you are used to city living. Folks that want to experience this rural life and the outdoor activities that it has to offer will do best.
