    Description

A small organization run by and for the Achuar community of Kuserua, located in the Amazon near the Pastaza River in Ecuador.

Our mission is to give Castilian (Spanish) language education to empower the Achuar Indigenous people, whose rights are impeded upon due to government and corporate interests. Environmental degradation and resource exploitation are two of the most dire challenges facing Indigenous Achuar communities – and without the resources and capabilities to defend their knowledges, rights, land and culture, they will continue to be marginalised and disempowered for government and corporate gain.

Here we believe education is the most important resource for Indigenous self-empowerment. By giving Achuar communities the opportunity to learn Spanish, we are helping their voices be heard – and giving them the tools to defend themselves and their land in the national political discussion.

It officially begins in 2018, but the journey began in 2016 when Jacinta , founder and director, was working in a nearby community and met the Kuserua community and their needs for the next generation. Speaking Spanish is not only important to live in Ecuador, but to have the opportunity to study and have the option to work in ecological tourism, which is a way to protect the jungle and their way of life.

The Amazon and the way of living there is something that can not be explained, you have to live it.
The Achuar culture is based on fellowship, balance with nature and Indigenous knowledge.
From the community you will learn another way of life outside the noise of the city and how to live in peace with the jungle. They have not only taught me how to fish, hunt and make chicha, but also, they have shared with me many stories, knowledge, thoughts and unforgettable experiences.

Our volunteers come to teach, play and also learn from the Achuar way of life.

Many of the children have a basic level of Spanish, we need, therefore, people who have a great interest in teaching the language in and out of class; reading with children, teaching basic Spanish, correcting their speech whenever necessary, teaching how to care for the environment and most importantly, using the jungle scenery to capture their interest.

We need volunteers who are flexible and ready for the challenge of the environment. In the jungle, it is sometimes difficult to have a fixed schedule and at times, whether it be rain, hail or shine, the classes won't happen which we understand. However, for the most part, we try to have classes from Monday to Friday, divided between volunteers and a teacher from the community.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We don't charge a fee to join the Selva team in Kuserua, however, volunteers are expected to pay their return plane ticket into the community.

    Getting there:
The community is situated in the Ecuadorian Amazon along the rio Pastaza. Before arriving there we recommend all volunteers to pass by Puyo (Ecuador) where we have a friend that can help you buy everything you will need. It's recommended to stay in Puyo for a week more or less to get used to the tropical climate and organize your flight.

There are two options to fly into the community; from Puyo to Kapawi, then a canoe and a 2hr walk to Kuserua ($100 USD per person) or, from Taisha direct to Kuserua ($160 USD for 2/3persons)

Because the community of Kuserua is so isolated that we want volunteers to stay for at least 1.5-2 months.
