    Description

Come and stay in our caravan! We live in the quirky town of Belper, on the edge of the Beautiful Peak District National Park, near the centre of England, in a 200 year old house that used to be a mill with a waterwheel. We are a family who love people and experiencing new cultures, with history, homes, families, and friends from The Netherlands to The Antipodes, and from America to South Africa.

Emily is an artist, author, podcaster, poet, and teacher. Matt is a musician, designer, analyst, and entrepreneur.

We married in 2020, and together we love all things creative and collaborative, taking particular pleasure in hearing people’s stories and exploring constructive narratives through open-hearted conversation. We love the outdoors and have an aptitude for making an adventure out of almost anything.

You can read the story of Emily’s earlier life, published under the title 'hitchhiking with drunken nuns'. She has two chatty and considerate sons still fresh to their teenage years.

We are some years into the lengthy task of working to bring new life to our old cottage and to make it into a creative space for us and for others.

From basic decorating to full blown bridge-building, from minor repair jobs to the design of a whole new tiny house in the garden... the project list is extensive. As well as house and garden development activity, help is also needed with maintenance tasks such as gardening and decorating.

We have many years experience living in shared households, including Emily’s past hosting of a great many work-awayers, many of whom are now good friends. We have much to offer as well as expecting a decent contribution if you come to stay.

We’re flexible with specifics but our overall expectation is for 4-5 hours commitment each working day so we can whittle down the to-do list and speed our progress towards making an inviting space where we can host all sorts of creative collaboration.

If you’d like to join us for the journey, we’d love to hear from you.

Caravan. right outside the house. It has a small comfortable double bed, small table, wardrobe and storage space, and a chemical toilet for use at night time (optional). Shower and bathroom are in the house. Washing machine at your disposal. Caravan is a little retro, but is clean and damp free. There is a heater for the colder months, and if it ever gets too cold you can stay in the house.

Kitchen is shared. We have a 'leave no trace' rule - you will be expected to leave spaces better than how you found them.

    What else ...

Our location offers the best of both worlds: easy access to a culturally fascinating heritage town with a vibrant creative community, as well as easy access to the stunning countryside of the Peak District National Park.

Belper itself has (outside of covid lockdown) a good selection of independent shops, farmer’s markets, arts trails, an independent cinema, live music venues and festivals, and rowing boats on the river.

There are endless possibilities for local walks right outside the door. Public Footpaths crisscross the local hills, which are well-appointed with arguably some of the best pubs in England.

Bus and train links from Belper town centre (a pleasant 1 mile walk away) provide routes northward into the heart of the Peak District and southward to Derby, which has good travel connections to Nottingham (30mins), Birmingham (45mins), and London (2hrs).

The list of nearby attractions includes the spa town of Buxton, the Matlock Bath illuminations, Bakewell (home of Bakewell tart!), Chatsworth House, Denby pottery’s visitor's centre, and many more. The list of natural attractions is arguably even more extensive, with a fine array of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing, camping, and other outdoor pursuits.

    We really like it here.
