Description
We are based in San Miguel de Allende, a culturally rich and visually striking small city in central Mexico, celebrated for its arts scene, architectural beauty, and deep connection to the natural landscape. The region offers hot springs, scenic hikes, botanical gardens, and countless hidden corners to explore, alongside some of the best street food and fine dining Mexico has to offer. San Miguel is home to a vibrant mix of Mexican locals and an international community from around the world, and it has been repeatedly recognized by Condé Nast as one of the friendliest cities globally. We feel genuinely grateful to live here and to share what this place makes possible through our projects.
Our work centers around two interconnected initiatives: a restaurante, a destination known for serving seasonally fresh, traditional and innovative Mexican dishes, and a school, an experiential education project that brings families, children, and educators together through nature-based and creative learning.
Accommodation for this exchange is offered exclusively in a rustic bunk-room space located on our ecological property, near the plant nursery. The property sits against a mountainous backdrop and functions as a living landscape—peaceful, biodiverse, and immersive. The restaurant, located on this land, has earned over 220 five-star Google reviews and is surrounded by flourishing flora and fauna. The space is also home to several dogs and a cat, and remains only a 20-minute walk from the historic center of San Miguel de Allende.
Behind the property lies a small valley filled with copal trees, wildflowers, remnants of revolutionary-era buildings, and a seasonal creek winding through red rock hills toward a water dam. This natural setting deeply informs both, offering an inspiring environment for creative and educational work. Starlink internet is available on site.
We host travelers, collaborators, artists, educators, and entrepreneurs from across the globe, including guests from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and beyond. The atmosphere is international, creative, and purpose-driven.
This exchange is ideal for someone who enjoys contributing a few hours a day to an active, multifaceted project ecosystem, with the remainder of their time focused on research, content creation, digital marketing, and other business-oriented tasks connected to both. It is a meaningful opportunity for a grounded, curious, and proactive person interested in conscious business, hospitality, education, and creative project development, and is particularly well suited to digital nomads seeking depth, culture, and connection.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Ashley has a background in design, yoga, breathwork and events. She currently works as an intimacy and relationship coach holding private and group retreats all over Mexico and co-founder of the school. She’s been a Workawayer and AuPair herself in the past, is bilingual in English and Spanish and has travelled to 25 countries. Shes a new mom to their baby girl who was born in June 2025.
Oskar, has worked as a university professor and is a passionate and wonderful teacher to anyone who is open minded and wanting to learn. He is the designer and visionary for our ecological property, from which the restaurant is run by his family. You will have plenty of opportunity to interact with everyone, as we will spend some days on the other property together, as well. He designs ecological homes and is co-founder of the school, teaching arts and ecological construction to our international and local students.
In spending time here, you will also learn about traditional, regional cuisine either through cooking or eating it, or both! San Miguel is also a highly desirable place to live with endless opportunities for cultural exchange and exposure to communities of artists, activists and free thinkers of all types. This was the home of the Mexican revolution and is centrally located for easy access to Mexico City, Queretaro, Guanajuato and Guadalajara by bus.
There are multiple well known and respected art universities in town along with hundreds of art galleries situated throughout the historical cobblestone streets.

Help
We are an upbeat, creative, and ambitious team, and we’re looking for someone with a similar spirit to collaborate with us.
The work is varied and changes from day to day, making this exchange well suited to someone who is adaptable, reliable, and comfortable stepping in where help is most needed. Tasks may include practical, hands-on support such as meal preparation assistance, organizing spaces and materials, helping with daily operations, coordinating supplies, and supporting the general flow of both the restaurant and school.
At the school, help may involve setting up learning spaces, assisting with preparation and cleanup, organizing materials, accompanying activities, or supporting logistics as needed.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys contributing in tangible, grounded ways and doesn’t mind a mix of routine and variety. A collaborative attitude, flexibility, and a willingness to help with everyday tasks are essential. Spanish-speaking volunteers are strongly preferred, as much of the day-to-day interaction takes place in Spanish.
This exchange is a good fit for someone interested in hospitality, education, and community-oriented projects, who values meaningful contribution, cultural immersion, and being part of a dynamic, purpose-driven environment.

Accommodation
The current exchange includes accommodation in a rustic bunk-room space located on our ecological land, near the nursery and project spaces. The setting is simple and functional, offering a place to rest while being close to the day-to-day rhythm of our work.
When you are not contributing to daily tasks, you are free to enjoy the surrounding natural environment, nearby walking paths, and the unique landscape that surrounds the property. Meals are shared according to the weekly flow and scheduling of the projects. We are omnivorous and regularly cook with meat, dairy, and other animal products. While all dietary preferences are respected, volunteers should be comfortable helping prepare meals that include these ingredients, even if they choose not to eat them.
To ensure clarity and alignment, please note the following non-negotiable points:
• We ask for 4–5 hours of help per day, or the equivalent distributed over fewer days if you plan to travel within the region.
• We require a minimum commitment of one month, and applicants must have completed at least one previous Workaway experience.
These points are essential for maintaining consistency and flow across our projects, and they help ensure a mutually positive and well-balanced exchange.
What else ...
San Miguel never gets boring. From yoga to mezcal to dancing of all types (salsa, ecstatic dance, hip hop clubs) to hot springs to theaters and cinema to architectural touring to pyramids to hiking to art galleries to air balloons and more.... your free time will be used very well. Everything in town is a walkable distance, but San Miguel also has cheap and reliable public transportation that stops nearby and we drive into town and markets often, which means there are regular opportunities to catch a ride with us.
