Description
Hello Workawayers,
my name is Carmel. I have recently settled down on my dream farm which is an old estate farm that was previously belonging to one family for over 100yrs.
The old farm has several buildings and old infrastructure. It has been neglected for a very long time.
The property came with multiple heirloom fruit trees and some very old grapevines. Living on the property is, my boyfriend, my sister and a farm hand.
We have goats , chickens , ducks, geese, turkeys, cats, a highland cow named Tinkerbell , an emu named Frederic, 2 ostriches, 2 water buffalo calfs Peter & Penny , 3 lambs Luna, Elio and Lambchop, and our sweet pups Missy and Argus.
Our farm plan is a work in progress as we are constantly going to be changing and doing new things in the coming years. Over the last year we have deer fenced about 85% of the property. And animal fencing which we still have more to do for the big birds new pasture.
This fall we will be engaging in a large hugelkultur project and planting haskaps and blackberries. As the rainy season progresses we still work outside to get things done, but there is some indoor jobs for when it is too cold and wet.
We enjoy many recreational activities. We like boating in the summer and try to get on the water often. I also like to get out on day hikes and mountain biking. We are travelers and we get away in the winter for a couple months for an adventure.
There is world class mountain biking trails just 25 min drive to Cumberland. Also world class hiking trails and beautiful swimming spots in the Comox valley. Mount Washington Alpine resort in Strathcona is only a 1/2hr drive from the farm.
With this new endeavor , I am excited to learn and grow as I develop the land into my dream farm. -

Help
Help on our farm may entail …Brush clearing for fence lines, hugelkultur, planting berry bushes, burning piles, splitting and stacking wood, picking rocks , pulling and cutting broom, landscape projects, raking leaves, mulching , fence building, weeding, planting, picking up poop, cleaning animal houses, canning food, and other various chores.
We have plenty of different projects and we welcome creativity.
We will work along on some projects depending on the tasks but we hope to find workawayers that are happy to help out independently or as a team with fellow workawayers. -

We have the kitchen stocked with a variety of food to make your own meals and we do many dinners together . We also appreciate experiencing favourite meals prepared by workawayers. -
What else ...
There is a bus stop about 1.5km away. We have a few old school bicycles handy for little excursions in the area. Workers are welcome to catch a ride to town if one of us is headed in. Comox valley is a hub for outdoor recreation. We also have a couple packable paddle boards for lending. Summertime when the weather is hot we sometimes have our working guests join us on excursions to the lake or local ocean beach spots.
