We are a family of four people, including a grandmother and granddaughter, who live on a property beside Sentinel mountain in the beautiful West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. We have a fairly large organic garden. The property is located 25 minutes south of Nelson and 10 minutes north of Castlegar. We are lifelong vegetarians. If you're interested in vegetarian cuisine, this is the place for you! Years ago, our family engaged in the market gardening business, but now we have a garden just for ourselves. To stay here, it is important that you like children with all their ups and downs. I enjoy traveling and meeting new people and have hosted people from all over the world. I am a semi-retired language teacher and enjoy learning other languages and helping people with their language. I look forward to hearing from you.
Babysitting / child care
Help in the house
Help with Computers / internet
I am happy to help you with your English and can share my knowledge of vegetarian cooking and gardening.
As a volunteer, you would be asked mostly to help with the garden and yard work as well as with a little babysitting and some housekeeping. We need someone to help in the busy planting season of spring, however, during the other months there is always a need to help with harvesting and preserving the food as well as general yard and home maintenance. Some help may also be needed with my 99 year old mother, helping her exercise, for example.
English, Russian, French and a smattering of others
You would be staying in my home on the first floor. You would have your own bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. If there are 2 or more volunteers, you would be sharing the bathroom with the other person. We live mostly on the second floor of the house. Meals would be vegetarian and would be shared.
During your time off, you can enjoy a wealth of activities. The region offers great hiking and rock climbing and bouldering as well as swimming, road and mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, which you can do from our river property. Alpine hiking is possible, but ideally, one would need a four wheel drive vehicle. There are local buses 4 times a day, 6 days a week to Nelson, Castlegar and other areas in the region. One of us or one of our extended family often goes to town. We enjoy a healthy lifestyle which excludes smoking and the use of drugs. Alcohol consumption is limited. We would prefer a similar approach to health from our volunteeers. Please note, I am allergic to scented products and cigarette smoke.
