We are a small community operating an organic farm and environmental education center that is off the grid. We aim for zero use of fossil fuels. We grow most of our own food, and also grow organic vegetable seeds which we sell to a local seed company.
Our community and farm are powered by the sun and farm-grown biofuels. We have developed a unique DC micro-grid that we actively promote to other groups and communities as an economical alternative to grid power and fossil fuel. We are continuing to improve our systems for fossil-fuel-free farm traction and cooking.

Help with Eco Projects
Most of our visitors are interested in our unique renewable energy systems. Living here, you can experience what it is like to live using only renewable energy. If you stay for a while, you can pick up some skills related to building alternative energy systems. We are also a working farm, so visitors can learn a fair bit about organic agriculture and horticulture as well. We are striving for food self-sufficiency with an emphasis on plant foods and perennials.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We ask volunteers for 25 hours of help per week in exchange for room and board. Help is usually agricultural- in the field like planting, weeding and harvesting; preserving food; cleaning seeds; orchard tasks etc. Sometimes volunteers plug into technological projects.
We have a guest room in a communal house where volunteers can stay. This includes shared use of the living room, bathrooms and kitchen. We cook and eat meals as a group, taking turns with the cooking. Our food is simple, whole foods, mostly from the farm and mostly vegetarian or vegan.
We are biking distance (one mile) from the small town of Louisa. We are part of a network of intentional communities in Louisa county, which include Twin Oaks, Acorn, Cambia and Mimosa. We recommend checking out these other communities while you are in the area. Getting around by bicycle and carpool is pretty easy here. We are a 45 minute drive from Charlottesville, and not far from Shenandoah National Park. We are one hour from Richmond. We may be able to arrange to have you picked up from Charlottesville or Richmond if you give us at least one week's notice.
