Dear Readers of this Review,
I sadly write this way too late. I stayed with this incredibly lovely family more than a month ago, but there was just too much stress and too many problems back in Berlin. If not for this, I would have written much sooner.
If you think about going to this family and if they are good hosts, the answer is 100% yes. Or
… read more even more. Before my stay with them, I was on another farm, and the host was taken off the website. I am going to keep it short: everything that could be wrong definitely was wrong. Just some examples: The house had holes in the wall and a lot of black mould, and a lot of things were broken or did break, and nothing was ever fixed. So I really had doubts about going to this family and actually thought about just taking the next flight when I sat at the airport and waited for the bus to come. But when Margrate, Anne and Gerry picked me up from the bus station at 9 in the evening with big smiles and a very warm welcome, and the girls immediately started to talk about soccer with me like they already knew me, I thought this week may be short, but it will be very special. Well, I was right with the last one and wrong with the first. Yes, it was a week that I stayed with this family, but I experienced so much and was so at peace with myself in this week that it felt way longer. And I enjoyed every day and tried to take as much of it in as possible. Deirdre and Gerry always look out for you and your well-being and never expect much, and if you are not capable of doing something (I sometimes was too weak), it's never a problem.
About the work: you work the whole day normally, but you don't really work. It's more like helping where you can, and I really have to say that I sometimes thought to myself that I hopefully am more of a help than an obstacle for them. Also, you have many very nice talks with Gerry about everything while you help him (you never work alone; instead, you accompany Gerry and help him the best you can), and since I felt like being part of this family (you simply do everything together, e.g., join them for all meals, etc.) and not a worker, I wanted to help them also beside the farm. Like cleaning the kitchen floor now and then or helping in the kitchen. Which is also just totally normal if you live together with other people and the housework really is not much (max. 30 minutes a day or something). And I really always tried to give my best since I wanted to give this family something back because they give you so, so, so much. You have yourself a double bed in an extremely clean en-suite room where you got your own bathroom attached to your room, like wow. I really did love the shower. The whole room complex is a dream, especially after staying at such a dirty house before. Also, you can eat everything, and if you need something (e.g., shampoo, etc.), they're going to buy it for you. Since I had to buy myself everything at the other hosts, the way they treated me was like a shock of warmth. I really was overwhelmed.
Now to the most important part of this stay: the family. This family is made up of three big but extremely lovely and cuddly dogs, the twins: Margaret and Anni, who are just the cutest, with more power than you could imagine and with a very rebellious and stubborn side, who open their heart from the very first second and see you as a friend, and with whom you are going to have a lot of fun (I loved our Starships Dance Sessions and am never going to forget them). Whenever I hear this song, I have to think of you two; Matthew, a quieter boy than his two sisters, is incredibly skilled and smart (you'll see what I mean very fast.) and a very nice person, Deirdre, a super-mother. She is able to handle so many things at the same time (we call it 'being able to bring it under a hat, and she is capable of bringing so much under one that the hat would have to explode because it's so full) and still is very lovely and always up for a nice chat and looks out for you. And Gerry, who you accompany all day and who has as much patience as he has sheep (like, seriously, I made many faults and got many questions, and he was never, never loud or angry or annoyed). But far, far away from all of that. And I really made one or two serious things wrong so that he had more work (e.g., once a sheep escaped because of me). And still he was one of the friendliest, calmest and most patient persons I know, and he never thought of me less or treated me differently after I did things wrong. Furthermore, Gerry always gave me some breaks other than the big lunch break, which I often didn't even want to take because the work was so easy and light that I still had power and wanted to help as much as I could, and because the work and working with Gerry and Deirdre was always funny.
So if you think about going there, don’t hesitate. I only was there for a week, of which I was 3 or 4 days sick, but I left with tears in my eyes and full of unique memories that could easily fill a whole month. And many, many videos and photos which, when I look at them, make me shine with happiness and the feeling of deep luck. I miss all of you and the sheep and am hopefully going to be back next year. (There are workawayers that were there four times already. That tells you how amazing this place is, guys). And I am very, very happy that I didn’t just take the next flight but came to you. Everything I experienced at the other farm, you made it more than worth it because if this place wouldn't have been terrible, I wouldn’t have searched for another host and maybe would have never gone to you. Because of you, the beauty of your country and all the nice people I met (all the neighbours and even Deirdre's parents, who were so, so lovely), I'm never going to forget my time in Ireland, and this wonderful country will always have a special place in my heart.
When I come back next year (hopefully), I am going to bring a lot of Lindor and some special Capri-Sun editions. I promise.
I wish you everything well, and thanks for everything. Really everything. Every smile, all the wonderful meals and all the memories I made at your place (I helped lambs to get born. Guys, you definitely aren’t ready for this. I had tears in my eyes. Every single time.)

My stay in Kerry with Deirdre, Jerry and the kids was one to remember! I felt as if I was part of the family, and got involved with everything they did. Jerry and Deirdre were patient and open to teaching me various things, which I appreciated. It was great to get to know Margaret, Annie and Matthew, who are lots of fun and full of energy, and always up for an extra person to play with their dogs, Jessie and Jill.
My 5 week stay with the family gave me the opportunity to feel what it is really like to live and farm in Ireland. They were very open in involving me in whatever was going on, including the kid's Christmas activities, family gatherings and trips to the local cattle mart. On the weekends, we would take a drive to local sightseeing places such as the Gap of Dunloe and Staigue Fort, which I loved! The location of their farm is absolutely amazing- right on the Ring of Kerry! Lots of breathtaking views, and opportunities to go walking or cycling. Deirdre and Jerry were also very accomodating with proving me opportunities to go and explore on my own, and were always willing to drop me off somewhere to do so.
Overall, I loved my experience with the Foley's. This was my first Work-Away experience and I can truly say that I felt like I was more than just a workawayer, and rather a valued member of the family. Thank you for a great 5 weeks, I hope I can visit again one day :)

My experience with the family was excellent, I stayed for a month and from the first day they were very good to me.

As for tasks, it's a farm, I did things I had never done in my life, coming from a city! Every day was different, feed and count the animals (sheep, lambs, horses and dogs), clean the stables, the shed, help in the house with the fire, cleaning, order, help put up a fence and also we went to paint and do maintenance on a house. The good thing about the tasks being so varied is that you don't get bored and you don't know what your day is going to be like, there is always something to learn with this family.
The farm is very close to Sneem, a small Irish town that feels like another big family, everyone knows each other and people are very friendly. The landscapes in County Kerry are incredible, it is true that it is quite remote, as this is the country side, but here you experience the real Ireland. Near Sneem there is also Kenmare and Killarney, two larger and also very beautiful towns that I was able to visit on my days off. Jerry and Deirdre were always willing to take me to towns or take me to some means of transportation so I could get to know and enjoy those free days.
To resume, my stay with them was wonderful, I had very good times and learned a lot, I hope one day I can visit them again, they are people that I will certainly not forget. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

So...I don't know how to start but I know how to finish : It was awesome. It was my first workaway experience and I stayed with the Foleys for 6 weeks. Since the very first day I was part of the family, and I'm not saying this to be nice, it's just how it was : I played with the children and I scolded them when I had to, I laughed a lot with De
… read more and Jerry as well as we had serious talks. It was beautiful also because they are so...Irish. I wanted to know how life is in Ireland and I had a million questions about everything, and they were so glad to explain thoroughly all I wanted to know.
Every day you'll do something different, sometimes you'll like it sometimes you won't, in any case they'll try very hard to make you have a good time.
Just two things you have to be aware of:
1) If you live in a city, remember they live in the countryside and there 20 minutes by car is a very short travel. So if you want to visit something "close" you need them to take you there because there are no buses nearby (but of course they will be more than happy to make you visit everything you want to see).
2) The children are very young now. So if you have no experience with children just take a moment to think if you're ready not just to play with them but also to mind them. Anyway they are lovely and, after a morning spent building houses, you'll have 3 new very good friends.
I won't say anything more or I'll ruin all the fun, just one more thing : Once De told me :"I want you guys to live it like a holiday" but for me it wasn't a holiday, it was much much more...and I'll never thank them enough for this.
P.S. I hope you like spuds (you'll know what I mean). You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

I was living with this amazing family for a month, you may think that 4 weeks could be a short time but they are going to show that a month is enough to do many different things, because with this charm family you are going to live a new adventure every single day, you are going to immerse yourself in Irish life, they will take you to every town
… read more that they can (they are a very busy family) and you will enjoy the beautiful sights that all of these places have (it´s VERY important to say that the best sights you are going to see on your trip are from the house).
As for the family... they are Matthew (7), Annie and Margaret (they are a pack) (3), Jerry and Dee (the parents). Matthew is a very independent boy, he is very excited about everything related to the farmer´s life, he is a very good worker and he is very mature with only seven years. Annie and Margaret (remember they are a pack, although they are very different) are the cutest twins in the whole world, love them!! they have a good relationship between them (not always haha) and this makes the work easier. Deirdre (the mother) and Jerry (the father) are very polite, and they are not going to leave you alone at work, never, you are only going to help them, but you are not going to do their work while they are relaxing (or chillaxing, if you meet this family you will understand me), and they will help you in everything they can (thanks Dee for fixing the bike for me) (thanks Jerry for worrying about me learning as much english language as possible), and thank you two for teach me everything you know about farming, I´m so grateful!
Finally I would like to mention Eigness, Dee´s mother, she is a charming woman and the kids love her a lot (you are going to understand this when you meet her because she is a very good woman).
It was so hard to say bye to this lovely family 20 days ago, and now I´m writing the feedback of my experience with them; I´m missing you all so much!
I hope everything is fine there. Best of wishes for you all family :)

I wanted to thank you for the 4 weeks in April. First of all, I have to say that the landscape and the view from the house are unique and beautiful. … read more being able to put together a single sentence in English, thanks to your patience and help today I find myself speaking English.
As for your activities, EVERY day you will do different things. There is no routine and that makes it more fun, you get up and do not know what you will do during the day, you can work at home or also end up collecting sheep for some corner of Kerry (crazy) haha.
As for your free time they are quite flexible, they want you to enjoy your stay in your home so the plan that you happen to do, you will not have any kind of inconvenience in doing it and they will want to help you in whatever they can !.
Personally if your idea is to get away from the city and have an experience with nature and animals for all tastes, your home is the ideal. The landscape that you get from any point of view of the house towards all its surroundings are incredible.
That's a bit of what I can leave you about the family, I hope someday to be able to return !!
Regards!.
Andrew.
Saludos!.
