  We are Jesus and Hernan, maestros of traditional medicine from high jungle of Peru. We practice Amazonian Ethnomedicine following the traditions of our ancestors - traditional herb medics from the Peruvian jungle. For more than 35 years, Hernan has been working with these traditional medicines with those who seek them, using all his knowledge of and from the medicinal plants native to the jungle, teachings passed down from the various generations of healers in his family as well as from other maestros from many indigenous communities within the deep Amazon. The focus of this family is to help others with these ancient medicines.
  
  We decided to open a Workaway profile so we could receive help with our projects and share our culture with different travellers from around the world. We are in Tarapoto, and for two years now, we have been hosting travellers in our home who have talked to us about this platform.
  
  We have two treatment centres where we perform retreats and dietas, as well as rituals with various types of medicines to treat a wide array of both physical and emotional ailments. Both of these centres are in the lush, green surroundings of Tarapoto - one twenty minutes away from the city and the other an hour away. The closer site, Ushpayacu houses a growing botanical garden, and will be used primarily for performing rituals, while the more remote and secluded site, Buri Buri, is intended for those who are seeking deeper personal evolution via dietas that utilise a wider array of medicinal plants and we need extra hands and minds on board to assist us in its development.
  
  Our project focuses on the maintenance of the land itself, as well as the upkeep and construction of new and old infrastructure on the properties. We already have various Tambos (open houses), a maloka and kitchen in Buri Buri, however we need to find hardworking and energetic people to help us with certain details in land upkeep and ecologically friendly construction.
  
  In Tarapoto, we live with our two children, two dogs, two cats, various chickens, one rabbit, six turtles and one parrot who thinks he is a chicken as well (he is madly in love with one of our hens). Our space is shared with all these animals as well as the wild ones who visit, an equally diverse variety of plants, and even more diverse array of people who we receive here from all corners of the world and walks of life.
  
  Our hometown of Tarapoto - a city well known as a touristic destination of the high jungle of Peru - boasts beautiful waterfalls, rivers, mountains and is a point of access to many other nearby destinations such as Lamas, Chazuta, and Sauce (Laguna Azul). The nearby town of Yurimaguas in the low jungle (around two and half hours by taxi or van) provides access to the Ucayali River, connecting us to other cities such as Pucallpa and Iquitos.

  Somos Jesus y Hernan, maestros de la selva alta de Perú. Practicamos la etnomedicina amazónica siguiendo el linaje de nuestras familias ya que nuestros antecesores fueron médicos vegetalistas tradicionales de la selva peruana. Por mas de 35 años Hernan ha practicado brindando la medicina con aquellos que la buscan, usando todo su conocimiento de varias plantas medicinales, conocimiento pasado a través de varias generaciones de curanderos en su linaje familiar como también de grandes maestros del interior de la selva. Entonces el foco de nuestra familia es ayudar a los demás con la medicina tradicional de la selva.
  
  Decidimos entrar en Workaway para que nos ayuden con nuestros proyectos y compartir nuestra cultura con los que viajan por aquí desde todas partes del mundo. Hace dos años estamos recibiendo viajeros así a nuestra casa en Tarapoto, y hemos conocido a varias personas quienes nos hablaban de esta plataforma.
  
  En este momento tenemos dos centros de sanación donde se elabora retiros, dietas y también rituales utilizando varios tipos de medicina ancestral. Estos centros están ubicados cerca de Tarapoto en sus alrededores verdes y frondosos - uno a 20 minutos de distancia y el otro a cerca de una hora de la ciudad. El sitio mas cerca que se llama Ushpayacu que cuenta con un jardín botánico que está creciendo rápidamente y será utilizado principalmente para hacer los rituals. El sitio mas lejos y tranquilo está destinado a la gente que quiere trabajar en si mismo de una manera profunda en su evolución personal a través de las dietas que manejan una variedad mas amplia de plantas medicinales, y allí necesitamos mas manos y mentes para ayudar en su desarollo.
  
  Nuestro proyecto está enfocado mayormente en el mantenimiento de la tierra como también el mantenimiento y elaboración de infraestructuras que ya tenemos y queremos construir. En esto momento ya tenemos varios Tambos (casas abiertas) una maloca, cocina y varias otras instalaciones en Buri Buri, sin embargo, hay mucho más trabajo por hacer.
  
  En Tarapoto vivimos con nuestro dos hijos, dos perros, dos gatos, varias gallinas, un conejo, seis tortugas y un loro que se cree gallina también (está locamente enamorado de una de nuestras gallinas). Nuestro espacio es compartido con toda esta vida, las plantas y con aquellos que recibimos acá.
  
  Nuestro hogar está en Tarapoto que es conocido como destino turístico de la selva alta de Perú, con lindas cascadas, ríos, montañas/quebradas y como punto de acceso a varios otros sitios cercas como Lamas, Sauce (laguna azul), Chazuta y la selva baja. El pueblo cercano de Yurimaguas en la selva baja (alrededor de dos horas y media en taxi o camioneta) brinda acceso al Río Ucayali, que nos conecta con otras ciudades como Pucallpa e Iquitos.

  Here we open our doors so that volunteers can share their day to day routine with us. We love to exchange our culture and knowledge with visitors, who in turn can share experiences with the other travellers and patients that are staying here. We all live as a family, where we search for harmony, happiness and community living to enjoy our place and the energy that is created here.
  
  Aside from his work as a natural medicine practitioner, Hernan is also a carpenter and woodwork artisan, able to share his knowledge in the construction of malocas, tambos, thatched roofing and more.

  Aquí abrimos nuestras puertas para que los voluntarios pueden compartir sus rutinas diarias con nosotros. Nos encantamos intercambiar nuestra cultura y conocimiento con los visitantes, quienes en cambio pueden compartir sus experiencias con los otros viajeros y pacientes que recibimos aquí. Vivimos todos en una familia, donde buscamos harmonía, felicidad y vivencia comunal para disfrutar nuestro espacio y la energía que se crea aquí.
  
  Además de su trabajo como practicante de medicina natural, Hernan también es carpintero y artesano de la madera, capaz de compartir sus conocimientos en la construcción de malocas, tambos, techos de paja y más.

  In our treatment centre, Buri Buri, we need help maintaining the land – sowing new medicinal plants and taking care of those that are already growing, help with constructing paths that connect the various tambos and facilities and assistance with other projects such as a new kitchen area with an oven and other basic utilities to prepare food.
  
  For this type of help, we’re looking for people who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and are comfortable working in typical jungle conditions – this can mean heat and mosquitoes. People with a background in ecological construction will be especially welcome, so that they can share their ideas and experience, but the most necessary attribute in a volunteer is to be someone with enthusiasm to help and learn who is ready to work with love and patience.

  En el centro de sanación que se ubica más lejos de Tarapoto (Buri Buri) necesitamos ayuda con el mantenimiento de la tierra – sembrando plantas nuevas y cuidando a las que ya están, ayuda con la construcción de los caminos a los distintos tambos y ayuda edificando otros proyectos como una nueva cocina con horno y otros utilidades básicas de preparar comida.
  
  Para esto tipo de trabajo buscamos personas que no tengan miedo de ensuciar sus manos y trabajar en condiciones típicas de la selva como calor y mosquitos. Personas con conocimiento en construcción ecológica serian especialmente bienvenidas, para que nos ayude con sus ideas y su experiencia, pero igual lo que es mas necesario es tener ganas de ayudarnos crecer nuestro sitio con amor y paciencia.

  For those working on our site, Buri Buri, volunteers will be staying on the property itself, and will seep in their own Tambo, provided with everything that is necessary for a confortable stay (mattress, mosquito net, etc). Here the conditions are basic, there is no electricity (just a solar USB charger), we use a dry eco-bathroom, and you will bathe in the river that surrounds the property.
  
  The kitchen is equipped with gas and everything needed to cook. Near the land there is a lot of platano (bananas used for cooking), mango and papaya that the volunteer is free to collect. Those coming here will be far away from any shops or urban features, and free to disconnect from the stress of city life. It’s a place to meditate, relax and be at one with nature. Access is possible via three routes; on foot along an unsealed road (an hour from a nearby village), weather permitting, via motorcar with Hernan, or in the case of large groups, by boat along the river (at the cost of 150 soles to be divided between the passengers).

  A los que trabajaran en Buri Buri, los voluntarios se quedaran hospedados en el mismo terreno, y quedarán en sus tambos individuales con todo lo que es necesario para una estadía cómoda (colchón, mosquitero etc). Acá las condiciones son básicas - no hay luz (solo un cargador solar de USB), se utiliza eco-baño seco, y la ducha se toma en el rió que rodea el terreno.
  
  La cocina esta equipada con gas y todo lo necesario para cocinar. Cerca al terreno, hay mucho platano, mango y papaya que el voluntario está libre de cosechar. Para los que vienen aquí, estarán lejos de cualquier tienda o facilidades urbanas, y libres de desconectar del estrés de la vida de la ciudad. Es un lugar para meditar, relajar y estar en uno con la naturaleza. El acceso es posible por tres rutas – a pie por una ruta de tierra de un pueblo cercano, si el clima lo permite, en motocar con Hernan, o en el caso de grupos grandes, en bote a lo largo del río (al costo de 150 soles para ser divido entre los pasajeros).

  In their free time, volunteers can explore the relaxed city of Tarapoto and enjoy its gastronomy typical of the jungle. Tarapoto is also known for its abundant nature and beautiful surroundings. Here there are three different waterfalls and beautiful natural hot springs where you can pass your free time. You can visit them by taking a mototaxi and it only costs 5 soles to enter. There is also a river nearby where you can swim, and for many travellers, Tarapoto is the gateway to the low jungle.
  
  From Tarapoto, people can also visit the famous Laguna Azul in Sauce, the community of Lamas and the village of Chazuta, famous for its archaeological significance and local artisan practises – all this and a lot more!
  
  Nature lovers will be pleased to know that living alongside the jungle, we are blessed by a wide variety of animals. In Buri Buri, named after a species of lemur, you can find many different types of reptiles, birds and with some luck – monkeys.

  En su tiempo libre, los voluntarios pueden explorar la ciudad relajada de Tarapoto y disfrutar su gastronomía típica de la selva. También, Tarapoto es conocido por su naturaleza abundante. Aquí hay tres distintas cataratas y hermosos baños termales naturales donde puedes pasar tu tiempo libre. Los puedes visitar por mototaxi y solo cuestan 5 soles de entrar. También hay un río cercano para nadar, y para muchos viajeros, Tarapoto es la salida a la selva baja.
  
  De Tarapoto, la gente también puede visitar a la famosa Laguna Azul en Sauce, la comunidad de Lamas y el pueblo de Chazuta, famoso por su importancia arqueológica y las practicas artesanales locales, ¡todo esto y mucho más!
