  • Description

PLEASE NOTE: You must read until the end to make sure you meet the criteria.

Our project is situated on a 1000 hectare nature reserve in South Africa. While here you will be surrounded by free-roaming game including hippos, leopards, giraffe, zebra. Outside the fenced areas we occasionally have lions and elephants.

You will also share the space with our working dogs that do conservation scent detection who have worked on numerous conservation projects - mainly finding poo, a job they absolutely love. We now work entirely with rescue dogs and so we do rehabilitation and then assess for workability. Many of our dogs come to us with aggression issues so please be aware that they are not pets. If you are uncomfortable with dogs that isn't a problem as our dogs are in fenced enclosures (during their off leash walks you can stay inside your accommodation) or at our house.

We are in the lowveld area of South Africa which is warm all year round (especially hot in the summers) and you'll have tented accommodation. We are entirely off-grid, solar powered and so we ask guests to be respectful and conserve energy where possible. While we love children, our dogs are working dogs and are not child friendly - we cannot accept anyone under the age of 16.

We need volunteers who are flexible - as a working conservation project with rescue dogs it can get a bit chaotic so you may move from exercising working dogs one day to helping with the botanical garden the next to assisting with carpentry. We will do our best to ensure you gain the skills you want and let you know which projects are a priority during the times you plan to come.

    The following are very important:
If you don't like animals, this is not an appropriate workaway for you!
You must have a reference and we conduct between 1 - 3 interviews.
Theft will be reported to the police and if you are unable to follow instructions we will have to ask you to leave.

    What else ...

During your time off you are free to explore our game reserve. There isn't any transport to and from the reserve, but we do go to town once a week where you can visit local shops and restaurants. In addition we also go to the Blyde River canyon from time to time or Franklyn park to exercise and train our dogs. Guests can easily rent a car and go to the Kruger National Park which is 85km away. On occasion we may go to conservation outreach programmes or community projects nearby.
