    Description

For those looking for an out of the way tranquil beachfront location, Mayan Beach Garden may be right for you. We are a small serviced apartment complex with a restaurant. The beach is great for long walks with kayaking and snorkeling close by. The owner is an artist and the restaurant and units are full of art and mosaics. This is a perfect place for people who love art. Every Wednesday there is an "art day" focusing on multi-media and upcycled art usually made from materials found along the beach. Everyone here is invited to participate.

There are 3-4 Mexican workers who work full time and a part time beach cleaner. We have two cooks , one, who has been with me for 14 years and a maintenance man who has been here for 20 years -- they are all Spanish speaking and will be your "compadres". They live here while they work. And even though they have roles, everyone does everything here. I cook, wait tables and bar-tend as well as paint and do artwork and interact with our clients between pulling weeds in the garden. Work-away volunteers can help anywhere needed while here -- that could be cleaning the beach, help with conservation efforts (AKA cleaning plastic from the beach and protect turtle habitats) walking dogs, and help with odd jobs around and the local area of Placer. One of the things that everyone participates in is beach cleanup as we are in a beautiful stretch of beach that is 30 minutes away from the small town of Mahahual and there are no government services here to help us (think Tulum 25 years ago). We will supply transportation to and from the town of Mahahual to here at the beginning and end of your stay.

The cook makes meals for everyone. We can accommodate special diets within reason. The owner is a vegetarian, so vegetarians and vegans can be sure they will receive healthy meals.

For those that also need to work remotely, the internet here has unlimited access and is excellent. Our internet is broadband supplied by fiber-optic. WE have two backups - Starlink and open cell service via TelCel. We can make sure there is a place to work. Please let us know in advance.

Travelers will be living and working with Mexican natives. If they are hoping to practice conversational Spanish, this is perfect. Most of our clients that live here are English speaking, so those hoping to increase conversational English will also benefit. Those who desire to learn how to cook traditional Mexican food, can also learn with my cooks Dori and Bianka. If you are looking how to create tile mosaics, this is for you. That type of artwork is the specialty of Rafael who has worked here for 18 years and Marcia (the owner). Marcia always has something she wants to beautify, and Work-a-way travelers with some experience in this can help advance the artwork here.

    Help

We are a family here. My staff usually stays with me for years, making a tight nit group. Primarily we are looking for random help that never seems to get done. There is a vast variety of tasks from washing dishes, painting, cleaning the beach, beautifying the beach and protecting nature by cleaning the plastic that washes up, gardening, helping make the place more beautiful, cleaning rooms, interacting with guests that live here, some heavy lifting (Gas tanks, 5 gallon water jugs, luggage, guest grocery items, etc), light maintenance, small building projects, mending, patching our beach road, even some mosaic tile artwork for those inclined.. Everyone here does everything because we are a small quiet place. People do not get bored. Some English is required and Spanish is helpful, but not necessary.

    Accommodation

Bedroom that may be with one other person, same sex. There are two bathrooms, shared with up to 3 of our Mexican employees. Sleeping accommodations are open to the fresh air with aid from a fan. Meals are eaten together with other guests, or with the Mexican workers. Our guests like chatting with our workers, so meal times are interesting and fun. Our cooks will usually make food that is different than what is on our restaurant menus, but nutritious and interesting. Usually Mexican food.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

We are located on the beach in a remote and quiet area, that is fragile and beautiful. The owner is a conservationist who creates artwork made from Flipflops found on the beach. Swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, beach walks, Turtle nest guarding, bird watching, bicycling, creating art, reading and writing are all things people do in their spare time here. The internet is excellent. We are 1/2 hour from the nearest town, but there is a small store 750 meters to the north and the vegetable truck comes on Wednesday mornings (the same day as art day).
