Description
Conceptualising a bike shed which doubles as a water collection point, pruning, digging, sanding and finishing the day with a glass of wine on the terrace. If this sounds like a perfect day to you, feel free to reach out.
We're a couple living outside Zurich in a small house with a garden. We both work full-time, so we'd love any help in the house and garden to create and add more magic to our little paradise.
We are currently looking for workawayers between end-January to mid-March 2024
Projects and tasks include working with us to:
- Trim hedges and mow lawn
- Prepare the vegetable garden ahead of sowing
- Sow/repot seedlings
- Build a low stone wall
- Set up a watering network
- Isolate a terrace/winter garden
Please note that this is a homestay. We are selective about our workawayers, as you will share our home and daily life for the duration of your stay. Also for this reason, we aim to host workawayers for one to three weeks at a time.
We will systematically refuse any requests which demonstrate that you have not read the Workaway description.Types of help and learning opportunities
GardeningDIY and building projectsHelp around the houseGeneral MaintenanceCultural exchange and learning opportunities
We live in a location which is perfect both to reach the city of Zurich (museums, activities, cultural life), or the surrounding nature (forests, lakes, mountains). Daily life can involve language exchange (English, French, German), culinary exchange (cooking, baking, preserving, ...) - while we tend to cook quite an international range of dishes, we’ll be glad to prepare at least one typically Swiss dish during your stay, and would appreciate if you would also cook a traditional dish of your own.
Help
We would like any help in the garden - digging, planting, building, watering, etc. or house - DIY, cleaning, cooking, etc. The specific tasks will change depending on our needs and weather conditions, but past tasks and projects have included:
– Building a wooden fenced rain water collection point
– Removing stumps, cutting wood, trimming the hedge
– Mowing the lawn
– Building raised planter beds
– Tending the garden and vegetable garden
– Building a wooden terrace
– Laying the garden path
On weekends, we enjoy working in the garden and will either work with you on projects needing more manpower or will progress on our own tasks alongside you. As a result, we often agree with workawayers that days off are taken during the week.
We will discuss upcoming projects with you during our introductory call.Languages
Languages spoken
German: Fluent
English: Fluent
French: FluentThis host offers a language exchange
At home we usually speak French together. We switch to English when we have workawayers, but if you’re interested in a French language exchange, let us know. We're working on our Spanish and Greek, respectively.Accommodation
You will have a private room, with a double bed. The bathroom, kitchen and other common areas are shared but you'll be free to use them comfortably and respectfully. We can host two workawayers if you’re a couple staying in the same room.
What else ...
The city of Zurich boasts cultural opportunities, museums and a close proximity to nature. The house is well connected with public transport and Zurich is a good hub from which to explore the surrounding areas of Switzerland.
