Description
Just 5 minutes from the beach you find our hostel, surrounded by jungle and paddy fields. This is the social hostel for backpackers, by backpackers. After seeing the insides of hundreds of hostels across all continents and experiencing the beauty (and the slightly less charming sides) of them, we said: let’s build our own dream place.
We can talk endlessly about that process, sick architecture or amazing people that helped creating this place (feel free to ask us!!). But staying here is not about that, it’s about meeting friends for life. Like one of us did on the first solo travel through South America; walking into a hostel in Rio de Janeiro, meeting the most amazing people, stay together for months and later reunite in London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Medellin, Ahangama and much more. That’s the privilege of traveling and why we will do everything to help make connections that last until long after U left us.
Our hostel is built in a colonial-inspired style with terracotta floors, arched balconies, and a tropical beer garden. With 58 beds and 2 private rooms, a pool, and space for family dinners, bar, DJ nights, a garden filled with games, and a co-working, we want backpackers to find their friends for life (or at least the rest of their travels).
Whether you’re a serial traveller, need a U-turn with a sabbatical, just finished uni or just like Sri Lanka; the hostel is there for u. Everything we do is about connecting people, from the 2 for 1 token you get with check-in so you can get a free drink for someone else in the hostel, only long tables and benches so people always sit together, our beer garden full of games and packed social programme. We have more crazy ideas, and want to hear yours too!!
What you can expect as a volunteer
We’re building a small team of volunteers to help us make this place come alive. You’ll be part of the beginning, that means we’re open to all ideas and can’t wait to build a dream hostel together.
Tasks may include:
- Welcoming guests & creating a warm, welcoming vibe
- Attending events
- Social media content (if that’s your thing!)
- Sharing your skills, music, art, yoga, photography, anything goes!
- We believe everyone brings something unique. Tell us what you love doing, and let’s go
What you get:
- A bed in our staff dorm (best mattresses in the area)
- Daily meals
- Access to all events and spontaneous adventures
- Free time to explore Sri Lanka’s South coast
- A chance to meet people from all over the world
About Ahangama
Ahangama is one of the fastest-growing surf towns in Sri Lanka, but it’s still got that laid-back charm. With fewer hostels than nearby towns, there’s space to do things differently, and that’s what we’re here for. Surrounded by waves, jungle, tuk-tuks, beaches with palm trees, parties, and a community you’ll never forget.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
After traveling for years, we’ve been on adventures with people from all over the world. Not only the things you do together while traveling are livelong memories, also the conversations you have are unique. Talking with someone that worked for the late queen in England, about someone’s job in India or upbringing in Sapporo (capital of Hokkaido, Japan). We believe you gain so much from interacting with people from all over the world and want to give this experience to you too.
Our team is a mix of international travelers and local Sri Lankan staff. As a Workawayer, you'll get the chance to connect with both worlds. You’re welcome to use your volunteer hours not just for hostel tasks, but also to get involved in meaningful community projects. Think: organizing beach cleanups, hosting creative workshops, or even giving English at a local primary school. If you have an idea, we’ll help you make it happen!
From learning to cook Sri Lankan curry to understanding the rhythm of daily life here, there’s so much to learn and share. We love hearing stories from your culture, learning your favorite recipe, or seeing your country through your eyes.
