We are making some projects around Indonesia concerning art project, organic farming , English classes and creative recycling. The recent project is located close to the Beach, TA'AT Village, Central Sulawesi Indonesia, close to PALU or GORONTALO and seeks to educate young people in language, art and environmental awareness.
I have come from Berastagi, Northern Sumatera and moved to TA'AT Village to make this project happen. I want to help this small village because many people are not able to speak English here but really want to learn it as it opens up their future possibilities and understanding of the world around them.
Most of all I want to develop a connection between all human beings. We come from different countries, speak different languages, have different skin colors – but we are all the same. We need the same things! There is no difference.
The world is not about money, it is about sharing, helping each other and spreading love and energy. Therefore I called the project I AM FROM HERE.
Our project is set on 1 hectare of land with an ocean view. We are a hard working and dedicated team of volunteers. We are doing this project for the love of the earth.
The project is entirely self-funded and still faces many challenges although the major obstacle of gaining community support has already been overcome and activities are going well.
We are presently building our first of several tree house that already serves as a school, studio and eventually art gallery. The building is made entirely of recycled materials (except the nails that are donated to us sporadically).
We believe in the concept of immersive and open-air education where skills are learned in an informal setting with the focus on building confidence and creativity through direct interactions with people and the environment.
Our English language training for example involves our foreign volunteers engaging in planting, building and art activities with the youth while speaking English.
Cooking classes for making local dishes are also given by the youth, and for those interested in learning Indonesian, this immersive approach is also available.
The English classes have already started with several volunteers. There are three kinds of English classes: classes for children, teenagers, and adults. As a result of the classes, the young people already feel more comfortable talking with foreigners and showing visible signs of enthusiasm towards the recycling project.
Our project is independent which means that we are making everything by ourselves with our own thoughts. We hope you can adapt to this way of working, creating and helping. Many adult members of the community have also expressed their support, including the head of the village who is eager to help in any way he can.
Our activities include:
Creative recycling of cigarette butts, sandals, shoes and plastic into sculptures, housing and other.
Building houses with recycled materials from the local environment, particularly wood, bamboo and dried banana leaves. These houses are to serve as learning hubs, accommodations and an art gallery.
Organic farming: teaching youngsters how to plant without using chemicals with the main focus on the principals of perm-culture. In doing this, we want to be an example for the people in the village.
Tree planting to help the thinning ozone layer, retain groundwater, provide shade and oxygen.
Teach painting with used coffee grinds techniques to village yout.
Create theatrical "fire war" using coconut leaves and fire walking.
Exchanging experiences: photography, video maker and film maker.
Planting coral reefs and mangroves.
You as a volunteer:
We are looking for volunteers who are self-motivated. We would like them to pursue their creative and functional projects themselves, and of course they get help from other volunteers and the community members. Volunteers are not forced to work, but having their own drive is appreciated. Our wish is that the volunteers are happy to contribute to the project – the ideas they bring, aid they give, and donations they make go towards keeping this dream alive.
The working day starts when you are ready (after coffee and breakfast) and goes until you have finished your project (which may take days that's ok too) .When it’s too hot – a swim in the river is always fun and cools you down. The project is going on the whole day while taking turns and with a lot of small coffee breaks.
At the moment all meals are shared. We are preparing and eating the food together as well as going to the local market to buy the ingredients, which is a nice trip! The preparation of the food is a great chance to learn the Indonesian cooking methods.
Eventually we hope to feed everyone from the garden but we are still in seeding phase. If you have any gardening knowledge to share or seeds that will grow in tropical climates (summer crops) please bring them along. We would love to grow an international garden!
You can start your daily work whenever you wake up even though we might be still sleeping because we are working on organisation and art projects in the night. We are all working 5 hours per day and have two days off per week. Besides the work we go camping, fishing, swimming,Diving,Snorkling and do whatever we feel like
If possible, we would be happy if you could bring the painting stuff, fishing stuff and English books (any kinds as we want to make a library), also some seeds, or art supplies as a gift which is symbolic of your stay here.
Note : In this new project has been running a few activities, as english classes, collect many inorganic trash, the trash would be the media for building a new house then. Beside of these activities, the others activities as I wrote before are following as well.
Beside of the explaination above, we don't accept a volunteer as like as :
1. Worry to be dirty because do not want to touch the trash, can't keep cleaning room for staying
2. Do not want to respect all local cultures
3. A lot of complaining or a complicated person
4. Only stay 1 week less
5. An arrogant person
6. A stubborn person
7. A lazy person
8. A stingy person
9. Not creative and not seriously for helping
10. A person who don't want to understand a situation (style jungle, place, etc)
I can't online often on this site, so please adding me by whatsapp or facebook. I'm looking forward to work together for a brighter future!
Thank you so much.
