While taking a two year sabbatical to travel and teach around the world, I found myself in the Domasi region of Malawi where I began volunteering with a community-run collection of nursery schools. During this time, I worked with both local and international volunteers to build up the capacity of these schools as to give the children a valuable head start in their education.
Because all of the nursery schools fed into the same primary school, I found myself in close collaboration with one. Here, I quickly realised the many challenges being faced to include; overcrowded classes, inconsistent student and teacher attendance, uninviting and uninspiring learning environments, minimal teaching resources, as well as gaps in basic infrastructure (eg: water, toilets, electricity, etc) but also saw tremendous hope and promise from a few energetic teachers eager to make change!
So, together with these teachers, the school management team, and local community leaders, we developed four primary goals to holistically improve the school.
1) Build new facilities and renovate existing ones.
2) Introduce new approaches to teaching and administration.
3) Invest in modern IT equipment and a wider range of teaching resources.
4) Assess and improve students’ all-round well-being.
While lofty goals for such a small project, we feel that this holistic approach is the best way to help students improve their educational experiences and create greater opportunities for lifelong success.
We are looking for people who can commit to staying for a month at least as we feel this can have the biggest impact at the school. There are no charges whatsoever in coming to help at our project. A lot has been achieved already, but there is still much to be done and we look forward to having you join our team!

Accommodation is located very near the school in the rural village. It is a basic house with 2 bedrooms - including bed, mattress and mosquito net. The house has electricity but no running water. A tap is found outside in the houses compound. The toilet is a basic (long-drop) toilet but the school boasts two flushing toilets for the teachers/volunteers that are only 100m+ away.
A large lunch is provided every school day consisting of eggs/meat, rice and beans! All other meals are to be catered for by the volunteer.
