    Description

WorkAwayers are needed in Chikwawa District to support education activities where there is a shortage of teaching teachers, resources and exposure to diverse learning methods. They can assist in teaching English, Mathematics, and Life Skills among others, helping learners improve communication, numeracy, and critical thinking skills. Their involvement also brings intercultural perspectives that motivate students and broaden their understanding of the world.

In health awareness, WorkAwayers contribute by supporting community sessions on hygiene, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and disease prevention. Their participation helps strengthen outreach efforts, introduce new ideas, and support local facilitators in delivering engaging and interactive awareness activities that improve community well-being.

WorkAwayers are also important in advocacy and community engagement, where they can work with youth groups to promote issues such as education, gender equality, and climate action. By sharing experiences from different cultural backgrounds, they help encourage dialogue, build confidence among young people, and strengthen community participation in addressing social challenges.

In livelihood activities, WorkAwayers can support practical learning in farming and livestock management, including gardening, sustainable agriculture, and goat rearing. Their involvement helps introduce new techniques, support knowledge exchange, and strengthen local capacity to improve food security and household income.

    Help

As a local organisation based in Chikwawa District, we are looking for an extra pair of hands to support our team in delivering community activities. Volunteers (WorkAwayers) will play an important role in strengthening our programmes while gaining meaningful intercultural experience.

Your support may include (but is not limited to):
Assisting with teaching in classrooms (English, Mathematics, Life Skills)
Supporting practical lessons and interactive learning activities
Contributing to proposal writing and project development
Assisting with fundraising through social media marketing (SMM)
Working with youth clubs and school-based activities

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to engage in health awareness and advocacy activities, including community discussions on hygiene, nutrition, and youth development. You may help organize sessions, develop simple awareness materials, and interact with young people in schools and communities.

For those interested in hands-on experience, you can take part in livelihood activities such as farming, gardening, tree planting, and livestock (goat) management. These activities support food security while providing practical learning opportunities.

We are looking for volunteers who are adaptable to rural environments, have good communication skills in English, and are respectful of local culture and community values.

We believe that even a short stay can create a life-changing experience—both for volunteers and the community. Through this exchange, you will share your skills, learn from local experiences, and contribute to sustainable community development while building lasting connections.

Volunteers will stay with a local host family in Chikwawa District, providing a unique opportunity to experience authentic Malawian culture and daily life. The home stay offers a simple but comfortable environment, where volunteers will have their own sleeping space and basic facilities.

Living with a host family allows volunteers to fully immerse themselves in the community, learn local traditions, and enjoy home-cooked meals. Facilities may include local-style toilets and bucket showers, reflecting the rural setting.

This experience is ideal for those who are open-minded, adaptable, and interested in cultural exchange, as it provides a deeper understanding of the local way of life while building meaningful relationships with the host family.

During their free time, volunteers can explore the surrounding areas of Chikwawa District and experience the beauty of rural Malawi. The district is located near the famous Shire River and close to Lengwe National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve, where visitors may see wildlife such as elephants, antelopes, and birds. Volunteers can also enjoy nature walks, village tours, and local markets to experience everyday life in the community.

In the community, volunteers can spend time learning basic Chichewa language, participating in cultural activities such as music, dance, and storytelling, or simply relaxing and interacting with local families and youth. This provides a meaningful opportunity to build friendships and deepen cultural understanding.

Transport to and from Chikwawa is available by public minibuses and buses, mainly connecting through Blantyre, which is the nearest major city. From Blantyre, local transport can be arranged to reach the project site. The organisation staff will also provide guidance and support to ensure safe arrival and orientation.
