Lauren and Amy were excellent Workawayers and we are very pleased to have hosted them! They were given a wide variety of gardening jobs and handled them all super well: weeding, mulching , wheelbarrow-loads of soil and wood chips to be moved around, harvesting apples and grapes & planting winter lettuce & kale. Plus—stacking firewood in record
… read more time and good humour. In fact Lauren and Amy did pretty hard work while having fun and listening to music! We accomplished a lot more than we’d expected in 2 weeks. They’re both interesting people; we enjoyed learning about their experiences and sharing some of ours about life in a small Gulf Island with lots of local colour. Glad they got to explore some of Galiano, and do some swimming and hiking through forests and along beaches. And, they were so appreciative that it was a pleasure to cook and dine with them! They are welcome back anytime!

We stayed with Suzanne and Art for 2 weeks at the start of September 2024. It was our first workaway experience and such a brilliant introduction to Canada! They have a beautiful house on Galiano Island, one of the small gulf islands off Vancouver. We stayed together in the garden studio, which has a small space downstairs and a staircase up to

We would work 9am-1 or 2pm most days; they are flexible with the hours that suit you. The garden has plants, veg and fruit. We worked hard digging, weeding, harvesting, placing wood chip paths, moving soil, digging etc. However, the hard work is rewarded with the most incredible home cooked meals from Suzanne. She catered for our dietary requirements and everything was genuinely delicious, especially knowing so much of what we were eating was from the garden. We also enjoyed homemade apple pie, banana bread, carrot cake, apple & cinnamon muffins, plum cake... And some grape juice cocktails courtesy of our harvesting and Art's bartending skills.
We were made truly welcome. Staying with Suzanne and Art is for you if you are looking for a home away from home. They have lots of tips for exploring the island and even kindly let us borrow their car to explore the Saturday market and go hiking and swimming in our own time.
Their 2 cats are lovely and friendly, and will often follow you around the garden as you work.
We feel very lucky to have stayed here and are so grateful to Suzanne and Art for their hospitality, conversation and friendship. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.
