    Description

    Hi and welcome to Portugal!

My name is Mike, a very active 52 years young, and I own 1.5 hectares of off-grid loveliness near Castelo Branco in central Portugal. It's a beautiful place - rugged, wild and free with great mountain views.

This project was originally set up in the UK as a safe and chilled space at festivals to help people who may have done too much, lost their friends, or who were simply not up for a full-on party. A place were anyone can meet and make connections, and relax with people from all walks of life.

Our aim is to bring a little of that festival vibe here to Portugal, on a smaller scale. A haven to gather your thoughts, relax and enjoy nature but at the same time have the opportunity to interact with others, experience the off-grid lifestyle and help build an amazing place for all to enjoy.

We are totally off-grid - facilities are very basic so please do not expect a palace unless of course, you fancy building one with us! As we live in the wild, you need to be comfortable with having the local wildlife living around you. The birds here sing at night which is quite magical to experience, and we're lucky enough to catch occasional sightings of wild boar.

It is a true off-grid experience but with fun as the number one priority - in our eyes this lifestyle is not work - we do things because we want to, not because we have to. We understand that many people use their holiday time to do Workaways, so it's important to us that it should be fun, and not leave you exhausted each day. We're a fan of Portugal Time, no rush - it's about the journey, not the destination.

We have fantastic neighbours in the broader valley, with always lots going on, including an outdoor solar cinema showing great films once a fortnight, and other get-togethers on a regular basis.

We promote healthy active living in natural surroundings with the aim to be self sufficient based on permaculture principles.

This is a place that people can come to make connections, share their lives and experience a different way of living with other like-minded people - we'd love for you to join us!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We live in a multicultural valley of which there are eight nationalities in our small community. English, German, Spanish, Belgian, Australian, American, Ukrainian, Portuguese. Etc (Some of us speak multiple languages). We draw on lots of experience working together to get things done.

    Our skill sets include:
    Food production and harvesting
    Permaculture
    Building and renovation
    Solar systems
    Off-grid living
    Plumber
    Electrician
    Music production
    Local property knowledge

This area of Portugal has a unique beauty. Castelo Branco, which is the closest city is only 20 minutes away by car and is an easy train ride from Lisbon

    1) There is a large caravan with; wood heater, hot showers, a fully operational kitchen which can accommodate two to three people.

    2) There is a camper which also comes with cooking facilities and a double bed, suitable for a couple or a single person.

    3) - not yet available - There is a second camper in the process of being converted which will become available when completed.

There is a composting toilet, a cartridge toilet, communal chill-out tents (with fans in the summer). We are looking for people to come and get interactive with the community. We hope the workawayers will share their knowledge and eexperience with us.
