What can we say about Max and Amy? Super positive people who fit straight into our family from the word go. They are enthusiastic, funny and are always up for the job regardless. Very quickly it was clear we could trust our business in the hands of Max and Amy and this facilitated us to get extra time away as a family while they ran the show.

We cannot thank Martin, Aideen & Nancy enough and we worry that we cannot fully do the experience justice in a short review but here we go!
This was our first workaway experience and we just don’t see how it can be topped, we will cherish our time at this place for a very long time to come. From the moment we arrived, despite it being a very busy
… read more & wet day, we were made to feel very welcome on the beautiful island of Kerrera. Martin, Aideen & Nancy are friendly, all round great people who we loved spending time with. We were also lucky to really enjoy the company of the other workawayer who was there at the same time & there were lots of opportunities to be sociable with her.
We also loved working in the tearooms, we worked hard but had a lot of fun whilst doing it. The customers are generally very friendly & happy to see some refreshments on their walk, it certainly helped that all of the food was delicious! On that note, you will not go hungry during your stay (Martin in an incredible chef, and there is always plenty of food when cooking your own meals), we were extremely well fed and any ridiculous notions we had that all the walking we were doing would help us lose weight were quickly put to bed!
We also helped to look after the young chickens & were thrilled to be there for the laying of the first egg! They are inquisitive, hungry & occasional escape artists, much loved by Nancy.
We could say so much more, but the long & short of it is… if you have a good work ethic, love being close to nature, enjoy spending time with children & chickens, love good music and like cake then don’t hesitate to apply. We loved it so much that we’re returning for another couple of months!

I worked here April, the first month of the year that the business is back open. I already know it's going to be a big highlight out of all my travel.

I spent most of my spare time before and after work and on weekends exploring the island - the lack of fences means you can just wander up into the hills in any direction. Hence, after a whole month, I still felt like there was so much of the little island that I hadn't seen! I went camping every weekend, as wild camping is allowed, and found lots of beautiful spots.
Other highlights included family dinners and card/board games, a day trip to Oban, and trying out Aideen's drumming classes! All in all a wonderful experience which I am already missing a lot. best of luck for the rest of the season, thank you for everything.

Martin and Aideen are amazing, and Nancy is absolutly hilarious. From the start it was very clear they had been hosting for a long while, communication was direct, kind and helpful, I felt like I was able to pick things up quickly here because of how patient and direct Martin was in the kitchen. I loved the shared dinners, playing drawing games

Brock and Eve joined our business and family for 4 weeks in Spring 2023. They are warm and open people, great company but also happy to have their own space and time. They applied themselves with enthusiasm and energy

I knew this was going to be an idyllic Workaway experience and I was not wrong! Kerrera is such a rich landscape that you can happily spend all of your time on the island, exploring hidden beaches, amazing rock formations and little caves. There are wild goats and tons of sheep (I was blessed to be there during lamb season). However if you do want trips onto the mainland on your days off, Oban is a really fun town also worth checking out.
This place just felt like home so quickly - I was so sad to leave. Thank you Martin, Aideen and Nancy for such a lovely month filled with laughter, amazing food, great music and unbeatable company. Martin, Aideen and Nancy have, without a doubt, provided us with the most quintessential and idyllic work away experience. I think the best way to illustrate our time on Kerrera is to describe our average working day:
Wake up, throw on our boots and take a 15-minute stroll to the castle and admire the awesome coastal views and say hello to some
… read more of the many sheep that are your neighbours. Not forgetting to say good morning to Molly, the resident peacock and bouncer.
Work begins at 10 am with Martin, where we would help prep for the day, listening to one of his meticulously compiled playlists peppered with hints to Martin and Aideens love of samba and reggae.
The 10-4 shifts really did fly because the banter, snacks and coffee were aplenty, although thorough experience with sarcasm is recommended. The work is easy, and you get to chat with enthusiastic hill walkers who basically just need help to decide how many cakes a 5k walk equates to.
After work is downtime. We usually went for a walk, run, or a cycle (with the bikes they kindly let us borrow) around the island, before coming back for family dinner. We had family dinner 2-3 times a week, being served up anything steak and chips to tom yam. Family dinner was one of the highlights, getting to eat well, have drinks with the family, play with Nancy, and hear all the local gossip.
Martin, Aideen and Nancy were so warm, accommodating and just fun and funny humans. We got a taste of island life- and all the fun and interesting events that can arise from this! They seriously made it one of the best work away experience out there.
If you are up for a month in the outdoors, putting in a lil’ work in, and actually living somewhere not many people will get the experience of even visiting, this work away will do you nicely. The island sells it enough, but the hosts make this workaway something truly special.

Staying on Kerrera with Martin, Aideen and Nancy for the month of April has been so wonderful. The beauty of the island is hard to grasp and for 4 weeks I didn't get bored by daily walking across the island and down to the castle. The cabin I stayed in was cozy and had the most beautiful view. I really enjoyed this little home for my time being there.
The evenings were our time to socialize over a delicious Martin-cooked meal that was always a real highlight (Martin cooks sooo good!). Often we would also hang out together, talking, playing games, singing together or watching a series. Aideen and Martin managed to make our group that consisted of very different people feel like a little family and we had a really valuable time together.
All in all, I had a month full with great work, beautiful nature, the most delicious food, interesting conversations, funny laughs and jokes, and a lot of support!

The three weeks on Kerrera were my first workaway experience. I went to this tiny island to clear my head and have some me-time far away from the city life and just be closer to the nature. There is probably no better place for that. Aideen and Martin created an amazing, magical place surrounded by the most relaxing nature and great views. They

I really needed to spend some time alone, so I wasn't socializing as much as I could, but I was never jugded for that (or at least didn't feel it). The job in the Cafe was real fun and easy (if you listened to the instructions carefully), working in the garden was like a meditation to me, and for some weird reason I even enjoyed cleaning. However if you don't like sarcasm, frogs and doing dishes, you may find it a little more difficult to enjoy Martin's jokes, late night walks to the toilet and busy days in the cafe ;) I came back home earlier than I expected, unfortunaty, but I took my "zen" from Kerrera with me (was enough for the next two months). We feel pretty lucky to have met Rikki and have her join our family for a month in 2018. We've made a real friend in someone who brings energy, fun and passion as standard. The work in was fun, especially since there was always music and a laugh in the kitchen. A typical workday starts at 10 in the morning with preparing eveything for opening up the gates at 10:30. After opening I was either on food, drinks and cakes, dishes or front of house. If its a quite day and there is not that much to do in the Cafe, we did ironing, gardening, cleaning the Bunkhouse or looked after their adorable baby Nancy. Aideen and Martin never asked me to do anything I was not capable of and always made sure that I knew that I just had to ask if I need help with something. The Cafe closes at 4:30 and by then most of the time the cleaning was done and you were free to go! We usually had dinner together around 8pm, which was something I looked forward to the whole day since Martin is an amazing cook! He also did a very good job in providing meals without meat or with a pescetarian option.
On my days off or even after work there were many opportunities to explore the beautiful but small island. The castle is just a 10 minute walk away and never failed to amaze me with its stunning view. Apart from the Castle there are many walks you can do on the island or just wander around the cliffs, which was one of my favourite things to do. When the weather was bad on a day off I went to Oban, which is a small but cute town with some nice pubs.
In the end, all I can say is: thank you, Aideen, Martin and also Nancy! I had the most amazing time on Kerrera. I loved joking in the kitchen, having dinner together, watching one of our many shows, playing with Nancy, going to the Castle, hanging out with the girls in the Byre, fighting over Kerreropoly and so many other things that just made my time with you unforgettable. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.
