Description
Orfeo: Bridging History and Vision for Transformation
At the heart of Tavira lies Orfeo—an evolving haven steeped in heritage and nurtured by our aspiration for community, sustainability, and innovation.
Our Story
Having invested our lifetime in making a social and environmental impact, as a volunteer or employee, we are now embarking on our social entrepreneur journey. Our ambition is to offer others the chance to make a meaningful impact here in the Algarve region and its communities.
Our love for genuine connections have driven our desire to transform our home into a space where moments and ideas would flow freely and would drive a positive, sustainable influence within Tavira's local fabric and beyond.
Our House
Orfeo, a XIX century house infused with Spanish influences, speaks by itself about historical links between Algarve and Andalucia. Its original owners remain shrouded in mystery, yet its roots have been entwined with Tavira's history. In the late '60s, it transformed into "Orfeo"—a sanctuary where people, regardless of means, gathered during the Saint Lazarre period to dance, celebrate, and find solace.
A Vision Unfolding
We expect Orfeo’s presence, after its renovation, will serve as the gateway to a multi-dimensional space envisioned for families, creatives, and sustainability pioneers alike:
- Coliving Haven for Families: Families seeking a community-centered, culturally immersive living experience will find a nurturing home at Orfeo.
- Retreat for Creative Minds: Artists, writers, innovators, and creators will uncover inspiration and collaborative opportunities in this serene creative haven.
- Sustainable Development Laboratory: Beyond its physical presence in Tavira, Orfeo will serve as a laboratory, fostering innovative sustainable approaches for Algarve communities development.
Weaving Together Past and Future
Orfeo intertwines its rich history with our aspiration—a historic house evolving into a modern space fostering unity, creativity, and sustainable development. We hope it will stand as a testament to the convergence of heritage and innovation, inviting diverse minds to collaborate and shape a brighter, more sustainable future for Tavira but not only….Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
Sustainability holds great importance in our lives, and we're eager to share our knowledge and experiences in this realm. Moreover, with proficiency in five languages, there's an opportunity for language exchange.
Additionally, we have ties with various local communities, such as the Yoga community, the Social Huerta project, the City Singing Chorale, the Art cinema club, among others, and we'd be thrilled to connect volunteers with these groups.
Should you have an interest in gender studies, we're open to exchanging insights based on our work and personal experiences in this area.Help
There are always so many things that could be done that each Workawayer could select activities best fitting his/her skills and interests. I would like in average 3 hours per day of help (5 days per week).
I don't plan everything in advance. There is enough to do in various fields and the tasks arise locally on their own. It is important that you can help out independently.
Some special help could be:
- Painting the main room
- Gardening (having rucola, potatoes, carrots, etc...)
- Coming with upcycling ideas
- Cooking
- Recycling for decoration
- Clean-up
- Restoring paintings, ceramics or plaster made objects.
As this is a non-profitable project in its essence, no help will be requested from the volunteers in relation to paying guests or retreats. Also volunteers will not be asked to help in spaces used for paying guests or retreats.Languages

Our house offers multiple private rooms, with the availability of up to 6 rooms.
Currently, we are specifically looking to offer one private room that would be ideal for a solo traveler or a couple—perfectly convenient and cozy.
Living arrangements would involve sharing the space with us and our two friendly cats. However, there might be times when we're not around, giving you the entire house to yourself.
Shared areas such as the bathroom and kitchen would be common spaces for us all to enjoy together. What else ...
Apart from the accomodation we will offer for free, we can offer as well:
- free access to our laundry area
- free tours around tavira
- free hiking & cycling tours
For the meals, we offer a priori breakfast but of course it might happen we don't share with you these moments from time to time. In the case we would not be able to offer food for a very specific reason, we would reduce volunteers hours up to 15 a week.
In terms of transportation:
- a bike could be at your disposal
- we offer free pick-up from the Tavira bus and train stations
You can of course use our internet connection and as well our equipped kitchen.A little more information
