    Description

    Kia ora and hello 😊

    A bit about our spot..
We live in the Bay of Islands in a beautiful valley called Karetu which means "Sweet Grass". It is said that in our ancestors search of sanctuary they settled where they found a beautiful aroma of sweet smelling grass. The only route to Russell (New Zealand's first capital) by car passes straight through Karetu.

We are surrounded by maunga covered in native bush and our creek flows right through our property. The creek provides water for us and the majority of whānau here in Karetu. Refreshing swims and opportunity for eeling are provided by our awa as well.

    A bit about us..
Our names are Mable and Zee. We have returned home from Perth, Australia after 11 years and want to help restore the family homestead.

We love to travel, explore, free dive, cook, relax, share experiences, educate and learn. Playing cards with a few drinks or a nice cuppa are always a favourite. I am a tattoo and Tāmoko artist and Zee practices Traditional Māori Healing. We are both very involved with our culture and we would love to share a piece of that with you.

We have two friendly dogs, two cats, three ducks and lots of chickens. We also have our uncle's cows every few weeks.

After many years of my Mum and uncle being on the farm by themselves, not being able to maintain such a huge property, it has sadly not been given the TLC that it deserves! We are really hoping to be blessed with as many helping hands as possible over the coming weeks.

A bit about what we are looking for..
We have a few building projects in mind. Experience with fencing, DIY or earth/light building would be an absolute bonus.

Everything else that we are looking at completing on the farm right now is pretty general - such as clearing, cleaning, gardening etc. So if you can do that and have a keen attitude we want you!

A bit about the exchange for your Workaway..
Helping 5 days a week, 4-5 hours per day in exchange for:
Accommodation - we have a caravan available for a couple or pair and lots of tents/tent space.

Breakfast and lunch/dinner on helping days - we are able to accommodate vegetarians but we are not vegetarian ourselves.

You are free to explore, hike and swim on the property. Beach trips, Sunday Markets, waterhole trips and other day activities we can organise for days off and we can help with local recommendations and must-dos if you're happy to go out and check it out by yourself.

We are able to pick you up from Kawakawa bus stop if you need, do grocery store trips weekly (if you wanted your own extras) and we also have plenty space for parking.

    A Māori Experience.

We are a Māori whānau from Ngā Puhi, Ngati Whatua, Ngati Maniapoto and Tainui.

We love to share our traditions and matauranga a iwi/tribal knowledge. You will benefit from the stories, food and experiences of he tangata/our people. We hunt and gather kai Moana/sea food and you are welcome to join us when we go. Our lifestyle will also give you insight to our culture and we'd love to involve you if you are interested!

We live across the road from our marae which we are more than happy to take you to and share the history of our valley, the Bay of Islands and Aotearoa New Zealand.
