We are an 'almost retired' couple living on our smallholding on the side of the Ox Mountains in County Mayo. We are in a lovely scenic rural area with Foxford just 8 kilometres away. Our children are adults, two of our sons are currently living at home but are working away. Gerry works at home on the farm and Jean has recently retired. We have a couple of horses, (both retired!) and some cattle, pigs, poultry and a dog. A large garden with an orchard, a glasshouse and a woodland. We grow some of our own vegetables and lots of fruit. We would like help with a variety of projects around the place, mostly gardening and general maintenance, also some help with cooking and light househelp.
Jean speaks fluent French and would be happy to help volunteers with improving their English.
We have two bicycles available for exploring in free time. We have been hosts in the past and have hosted almost a hundred students from all over the world so we are very used to sharing our living space and enjoy meeting new people.

Accommodation
Own double bedroom and shared family bathroom, lots of room for quiet relaxing space if required. Volunteers would share our food and join in with food preparation. We are not vegetarians but can comfortably cater for non meat eaters, our meals are frequently vegetarian and although we no longer produce as much of our food as we used to we do buy almost exclusively organic produce.
What else ...
The area is beautiful with lots of hill walking opportunities in the immediate area and outdoor activities of all sorts nearby. Cultural activities include local theatre/ art centres in nearby towns, a branch of the National Museum of Ireland Country Life is just 20 kms away and one of the very few working woollen mills in Ireland is also almost on our doorstep. Traditional music is frequently to be heard in nearby towns.
The coast and the wonderful sandy beaches we enjoy are also within reach. We would be happy to bring volunteers to local towns or locations when we are going out ourselves. Public transport for local travel is very limited but mainline bus and train are regular and Knock Regional Airport is only half an hour away.

Left by host for Workawayer (Conor)
Conor stayed with us for three weeks and during his time with us he got involved thoroughly in our activities. He helped me, (Jean) in the garden mostly with weeding, digging and making paths. Although he was not experienced with a spade he made great efforts and carried and emptied a great many wheelbarrow loads of weeds. He also helped with… read more saving our turf. Conor is a very sociable young man who joined in our life here and was an interesting and intelligent guest to have visiting. He is also an excellent cook and willingly helped with daily household chores. Conor would be an asset to any hosts he joined as he is openminded and willing to learn and is great company. I stayed with Gerry and Jean for three weeks in June, and would gladly recommend them to the Workaway community. They are very genuine and friendly people who welcomed me warmly into their lives. I am happy to say that I was treated like family during my time there, as I was introduced to their friends and family (in person and digitally!) who… read more were also kind enough to include me in activities like going out to dinner.
In terms of work, I was mainly working in the garden with Jean, doing a lot of weeding. We also worked to dig out a path. Other small jobs included going for turf and helping to chop wood. I went out with Gerry a few times to see his "cowies", which we also had to move from one field to another. Most of the work is outdoors and can be physically challenging but really rewarding. Gerry and Jean are happy to help you learn new things, are patient and love to share their knowledge with you.
It was a great opportunity to learn about rural life in the west of Ireland, and you will come to have a better understanding of the culture and politics which you might not normally experience if you were just staying in a holiday home. The food was also a highlight, as there is loads of local produce coming from the garden, and Gerry and Jean are both excellent cooks. I was also asked to cook, as the tradition is for volunteers to prepare a signature dish. So before arriving, have an idea of what you might want to make!
The scenery is spectacular in a rugged sort of way, as the house is on the side of a mountain. The weekend before leaving, I got the chance to go on a nice, long hillwalk which was a lovely way to see the area at a slower pace. I was also allowed to borrow a bike, and this enabled me to go a bit further and see more of the countryside.
Overall, I am happy to have had this experience, following a fairly intense two years of teacher training and all the stress of the pandemic. While remaining active, I managed to forget about Covid, and even the time of day/day of the week, but in the nicest way possible.
