Description
Hello there, we are welcoming individual people or couples to our home, which is part of a small community of 6 people at the beginning stages of our project. We live in an old village called a clauchan in Irish, a cluster of houses where historically several family groups lived, that we are regenerating through community building, caring for the land, and principles of nature connection (following the 8 shields model). Andrew and I,s professional jobs are gardening, guiding therapeutic nature connection, pottery, music, song leading and selling products we create here (herbal skincare and apple/pear juice). Other community members work in theatre and healing arts such as family constellations, body work and supporting grieving processes. The projects we are developing are restoring Hazel coppice in our native woodland, restoring wildflower meadow land, producing apple juice from our orchard, developing our capacity to host events through building and renovating structures, and hosting community celebrations during the significant changes in season. We have a beautiful naturally built roundhouse in which we host our own and other peoples events, events can include nature connection workshops/camps, family constellations workshops, grief-tending rituals, regenerative land management, bodywork, group singing, pottery, rites of passage and ancestral crafts. We also have a flock of ducks and cat : )
We live in South Connemara where there are many opportunities to go mountain hiking, visit secluded beaches and there are many lakes nearby. We are a 30min drive from the sea and Galway city which is a very multi-cultural small city rich with music and the arts. Public transport is a 30min walk or we can help you get to and from the bus-stop.
Accommodation will be in your own part of the house with a private sitting room and (mostly) private bathroom. There is also an infrared sauna you can use. Food is organic and vegetarian.
We would love help with gardening, landscaping, building, and developing resources for the community project we are a part of.
People who enjoy doing hands-on tasks outdoors would enjoy this exchange :)

UN sustainability goals this host is trying to achieve

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We will cook and eat dinner together in the evenings, including occasional meals with the other members of our re-village project.
At the changing of the seasons we often host 'meithaels' which is the tradition of community gathering together to accomplish bigger tasks, where people of our wider community come to help us for the day. We also often celebrate these seasonal shifts with community rituals.
Every week we have a community workday, and once a month we invite people from our larger community to join us. We also have impromptu meals together at other times.
We feel it is vital to have cultural exchange and the joy of sharing to help our community grow in wisdom and vitality. While we are new to workaway we have hosted volunteers on numerous occasions and have experienced how meaningful it is to have cultural and inter-generational exchange.
Help
We are looking for help developing our outdoor landscape (including biodiversity management) and renovating some of our infrastructure. Tasks will include things like - clearing overgrown areas, building small stone walls, working with Hazel Wood for fencing, caring for bushes and trees, moving and processing firewood, and eco-building.
We will work alongside you atleast 1 day a week (and more if our professional work allows!). Skills we are happy to share include biodiversity management, scything, poultry care, community living, natural building and more.
