We are English speaking and have bought a house in the French Alps to renovate and make our own. We have 4 sons scattered across the world. Rowland, in charge of the building project, has huge amounts of energy and is a very talented DIY Builder. Rowland is also a keen cyclist. We are both quite easygoing and hospitable and Janet looks after the culinary and physical needs any guests may have. She is also trying to start a garden. We love the views from our house, the clean country air, beautiful walks and picturesque Alpine architecture and would love to share all of this with any workawayers who are keen on getting involved in our project.
DIY and building projects
We are situated in the Meribel Valley of the Alps, in a small village called Les Allues. The Alps are overrun with amazing walking trails, climbing opportunities as well as a fantastic area for road biking and mountain biking. So this opportunity would be specially suited to travellers wanting outdoors experiences and tranquility. Travellers could do day trips to Italy from here. Albertville is half an hour's drive away and has a Medieval city (Conflans) to explore, as well as being a large centre where just about anything is available. Annecy with its stunning lake is about an hour away, and offers good thermals for paragliding and Grenoble, with its rich history, is about 1 and a half hours away.
We are renovating a house in the French Alps and are doing a lot of the work ourselves. Volunteers are needed with different skills: plastering, stonework to repair stone facade after installing windows, general carpentry to help erect dry walls and plasterboard, painting, tiling. We envisage offering opportunities for volunteers over the next few months and different skills would be needed at different times. Ideally a commitment of up to 5 hours a day for 5 days a week would be great, as far as helping is concerned, but this negotiable.
The house is currently divided into 3 apartments and most of the work is happening in the top apartment, the other 2 being nearly complete. One of the apartments is available for volunteers to stay in, with fully equipped kitchen and bathrooms. Main meals are provided.
Life can be quiet in the Alps, but if you are someone who enjoys the outdoors, there is lots to do. We are quite "clean-living" (no smoking please) and like good food and being sociable. Ideally you need your own transport, but we can drop you off at the local station of Moutiers (15 mins away) to travel to a variety of places: Albertville, Chambery, Annecy, Aix-les-Bains.
